    In classic theater, the opposite of comedy is not drama. The opposite of comedy is tragedy. Both are forms of drama. In a drama, as in real life, there is conflict. In a tragedy, things end badly, often with the death of the hero(es). In a comedy, things end on an up note, if not happily. A show with the classic "Hollywood ending" would make it a comedy: "they rode off into the sunset," or "they all lived happily ever-after." Humor can play a role in either a comedy or a tragedy just as in the drama of real life.
    Of course, neither the Emmys nor the Oscars, nor imdb use the classic meaning of the words comedy or drama for their genre classifications, so you could say that my point is moot. But, there it is for what it's worth.

      As opposed to a dromedary, which has a hump on it's back, and can go a long time without water.

        yeah monk can be funny at times n 3n thats why i like it. but it is more drama, like with my favorite episode; Mr Monk vs the cobra or whatever where's he b16d0uried alive and he's dying and he talks to trudy..
        then too their categories never make sense. They shut out lost for chrissakes and put desperate housewives for comedy when it too should be drama.

          I love his encounters with Tim Bagley's character, Harold Krenshaw (Dr. Kroger's other OCD patient). If that isn't funny tell me what is.

            OMG, "Monk gets a New Shrink" was the best EVER, was it not?

              I'm guessing the show is both a comedy and a drama. I laugh and cry during almost every episode.

                  Its not a "Sit-Com" (like say seinfeld) but its still a comedy.. My #1 favorite show on tv is "Scrubs"
                  (Monk is probably #2.) Now scrubs is about a bunch of intern's at a hospital.. People die every episode, sometimes its the main characters fault. The show swings from very sad and touching, to downright hysterical. Thats what great shows do. They find that balance of drama and comedy that makes it way over the top, but still believable.
                  ER= Drama
                  Scrubs = Comedy
                  CSI = Drama
                  Monk = Comedy

                      The5b4 season finale on Friday, August 20 was just hilarious. Monk's psychiatrist gives him a new medication to try for his OCD and it makes him "normal" again.if you could call it that. I won't go into details in case you haven't seen it yet, let's just say Monk was not "himself." The episode just totally cracked me up. And there were parts of the show that were pretty heart-wrenching. I LOVE Monk, I hope it's on for a long, long time.I think it's the best show on right now. As a matter of fact, it's the only show on network TV that I will watch.

                        I totally agree. MONK is my favorite also. Tony Shalhoub is perfect for this role. Hope he gets another Emmy.

                            Being someone suffering from OCD, I think 'Monk' is truly hilarious. I'm only fourteen, and yet, I can relate to most everything his symptoms personify. This show makes me giggle unendingly at how he personifies the disorder.

                              I think in a genre, Monk would be classified somewhere between a drama and a comedy. You can always disagree with its classification to a certain degree, and I'm sure you're right. But I personally feel that Monk doesn't reinforce mean-spirited humour towards those that suffer from an obsessive-compulsive disorder. I think bossanovachin's post sums this up in the best way: It infact, indirectly gains awareness about the disease and how dracastically it can change one's life; and the laughter saves you from isolation, and it makes it easier to let go.

                                it kind of is a comedy.. and it was nominated last year for an Emmy under "comedy" too. i think it kind of falls under "comedy/mystery"? its not really a drama but it does have drama some of the time.

                                        I agree. Monk is a great and funny show. I love how it focuses on Monk's brilliance because of his OCD, rather than his weirdness because of his OCD. But, I do agree. Monk gets pretty deep sometimes, and I like that. I enjoy laughing my head off, but I like to see that it's very grounded and senseable, too. Monk is a fantastic show.
