So many Australian actors

One of my theories is that a young American actor who wants to become a U.S. movie star should
move to Australia, develop an accent, appear in Australian filmsand then get discovered and brought back to Hollywood AS an Aussie.
We seem to be generating more male stars from that macho nation with every passing year. -

Mel Gibson's mother & grandmother were Australian. After being badly injured working on the railways his father needed help money could not buy so he moved the family to Australia because he had more Australian relatives than American relatives. Mel was a child when the family moved and all his training as an actor was in Australia, mostly at the National Institute of Dramatic Art at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Not all Aussies go to Hollywood of their own volition. I wonder what would have happened if Nicole Kidman had not made 'Dead Calm' and attracted the eye of Tom Cruise who pursued her to get her to appear with him in his 'Days of Thunder' movie. She was happily entrenched in Aussie TV mini series at the time. Russell Crowe, Sam Worthington - both pursued by Hollywood big wigs after being seen in a movie 'Romper Stomper' in Russ's case, and after doing a mystery screen test for an Aussie agent, not knowing it was about a Hollywood movie in Sam's case. The real reason SOME Hollywood bosses turn to Aussie actors is they are unknowns in the US, but they have extensive resume's of acting work in Australia. It's a great combination. Experience and anonymity, plus they're English speaking and versatile enough to put on accents. That's a necessity as our industry is small. Because American actors are living in the largest entertainment industry in the world, outside of Bollywood, they don't necessarily go that extra mile and study accents. That can make it harder for them to get that head start. It just depends on what the casting directors need for a specific role. -

Russell Crowe is from New Zealand. He isn't Australian. H1354e likes to think he is, but he is just another big ego who doesn't deserve his recognition.
By the way, Sam Worthingotn - born in England. And as over-rated as Crowe. -

I didn't learn that Taylor was Australian until he mentioned it in an interview while promoting the Eighties TV series "Outlaws".

and Aussie actor Andrew Clarke (Matt McGregor in 'The Man From Snowy River' TV series, known in the US as 'Snowy River, the McGregor Saga) was wanted as 'The Saint' replacing Roger Moore. IMDB don't list it, but I thought he did one episode in Hollywood.

I'm 99% sure he did do a "Saint" telemovie/series, and it might be my imagination, but I'm pretty sure I saw it at the time. I thought Andrew Clarke was gorgeous and a competent actor.I don't know why he didn't have more overseas' success. Maybe he didn't want to pursue it.

In Erol Flynn's time Merle Oberon was an up and coming actress and she came from a questionable background. Mother was from India I believe and father unknown Caucasian, in other words born on the wrong side of the blanket. Erol Flyn was from Tasmania and someone told her to say she was from Tasmania as well thinking that nobody would question it coming from a remote part of the world. Got that tit bit from David Niven.
