Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Cicely Tyson

    marydonna1131 — 16 years ago(September 03, 2009 04:38 PM)

Melissa Gilbert, Little House on the Prairie, stated in her memoir that Ms. Tyson was a nightmare to work with. She was always late and disrespectful of other people's time, she didn't know her lines and she was an arrogant, self centered person. She had an unpleasant experience working with her. It's written in her book.

Melissa said something about her coming in and pouring out all the coffee that was in the refreshment trailer. Sad, that a great and wonderful actress like her (Cicley, not Melissa) acted that way. Sigh.

Well, if you'd struggled as long and hard as Ms Tyson in the tough acting business, then hit the top with an Oscar nomination for Sounder and two Emmys for Miss Jane Pittman, and then ended up in crap like Airport - The Concorde, and playing that awful role in Fried Green Tomatoes, you'd act like a diva! Ms Tyson is one of America's greatest screen actresses, but there have been more lows than highs. Her television work is often exemplary, but on the big screen the great roles - both leading and supporting - have eluded her since Sounder & Miss Jane Pittman in the 1970s. It is a tragedy. There is still time for her to win that Oscar, after all, that other fine actress, Ruby Dee, was nominated for the first time when she was in her eighties. Bette Davis was often criticised for being a b**** off screen, but who really cared, as long as we could see her on the screen?

I resent you calling Airport crap! That is a masterpiece of comedy and very entertaining and memorable! LOL

Airport is not a comedy. You are mistaking it with Airplane, which spoofs it.

not too mention Airport has been copied and imitated and people to this day still use lines from that movie!

Excuse me, ladies, I was trying to have a serious, heated debate about Miss Cicely Tyson and the accusation that she is a tempermental Diva!!!
For the record, I LOVE Airplane, especially the bit when Ethel Merman pops up and sings 'Coming Up Roses' from Gypsy (tee hee).

                          I'm between and betwixt,
Running in a race someone has fixed.
Sorry for getting sidetracked. I obviously didn't have a lot to add to this thread, but I find the notion that Cicely Tyson might be a temperamental diva fascinating because she's always appeared so professional when the camera was rolling at least to us in the audience.
I never heard of these allegations until recently, and I'm still not sure what to make of them (< Insert "Airplane!" quip here). Ms. Tyson's heyday was before the era of trash TV and TMZ, and the Enquirer wasn't considered a credible source for these details in the '70s (if it's credible now). I guess we should be thankful to Melissa Gilbert for setting the record straight, assuming she's telling the truth.

''Airport 1979'' is a LOT funnier than ''Airplane''. Cicely Tyson and Susan Blakely are the only professionals in it, and the only ones you feel for.

She hasn't struggled. She may not have had a typical A-lister career but she has been paid handsomly doing those TV films and whatever, she successfully got nearly $1mill in the 80s with that Elizabeth Taylor lawsuit. Also just because people have had a hard life, which Tyson hasnt, it doesn't mean that justifies treating people like utter crap. Screw people like that.

There are a good number of white actresses who are as hard to work with as any black actress. Let's not tie this to one race. Most people have said that Shannon Dorothy is one of the hardest actresses to work with in the last 20 years! Unfortunately Cicely Tyson does have a diva attitude. She told regular people and the media not to take any pictures of her at a charity event because she doesn't like any type of flash in her face. When one peerson took a picture, she screamed at him! She's one of the greatest actresses I've ever seen though!
