Why in the heck is she paying RENT at age 66 on the UPPER WEST SIDE? YEAH, that is a recipe for financial problems. DUH. She is lovely and a fine actress, but should have heeded someone's advice LONG AGO to buy an apartment if she wanted to live in NYC. She could have paid it OFF by now.
lifestyle of celebrities - they get used to a standard of living where they have to pay thousands of dollars for a dress and don't live according to their means even when they're not high earners.

The landlord was apparently illegally charging tenants market-rate rent, despite getting a tax break from the city, which should have provided for rent-stabilization.
She was reportedly paying upwards of $7,000 a month at the time." -

Even if her pride kept her from taking some roles she has had a quite successful career and still piddled all that away. I cant see her being any better off if she had taken more roles, she just would have spent that much more.
It is quite alarming when someone who has made so much squanders it and it is even more so when that person has made so much and is at a retirement age of 66. -

agreed. if she were some trailer trash woman from missouri who won the lottery and now at 66 had wasted it all and couldn't afford her rent, the entire NATION would be laughing at her and showing their children an example of what they should NOT do. but because she's a celebrity, it's like america feels she's ENTITLED to wealth, even if she squandered what she had. every article on the topic of 'Dianne Wiest can't pay her rent' (which I would think was vulgar except that she is TELLING the media this in order to garner sympathy from Hollywood people who can give her more work) seems sympathetic to her. why is she better than trailer trash who waste their lottery money? she is not. i am glad to see that there are a few other fans of wiest who agree with me. intelligence is not completely absent in the US.

seriously. a close friend of mine has a small 2 bedroom on the upper east side and pays $6,500 a month rent, currently. surely wiest is paying at least this much or likely much more. but no, by all means, cry poor.

my friend is also not a super-high earner and her husband is in grad school - they get support from their families, i am sure, but it seems as though she doesn't have money for other things and they spend most of their money on rent and nanny. many ny'ers are impractical like this, to an extreme. friends i consider smarter with money live in brooklyn or queens and pay $1,000 to live in a small room with roommates in the apartment. the subway is pretty fast into manhattan and brooklyn is awesome.
but you're right, it is a GREAT place to buy and rent out and yes, LA is cheaperhowever, LA is paparazzi-land, and NYC is easier on celebs. you're also right that wiest COULD have a place somewhere else, if she is not a complete moron. she didn't say she would be homeless, only that she had to move out of her apartment because she can't afford to pay the rent. who knows. -

I also am not an accountant, but 9 years ago (earning a measly $24k/year) I bought a $75,000 apartment with a $10,000 down payment - promptly spending every penny of a small inheritance I received from an uncle. Paying about $500/month mortgage (how much is rent in Jerusalem, where I bought this apartment? Much higher than that now, to live by yourself in a 1 bedroom!) I am now 11 years away from paying it off completely - and I am 44.
I am not an accountant and many feel my financial acumen is none too impressive, considering I've left way higher paying positions in high tech and publishing to work in the non-profit sector, doing what I believe in for a pittance. And YE16d0T I do not have to move out of my apartmentwhich is now worth over 3 times what I paid for it.
BUY LOW, SELL HIGH - any idiot can understand that, and if someone her age hasn't taken the opportunity to BUY LOW when they had the money at OBVIOUS market low points (say 2010-2012 in the US, even in NYC), then they are truly idiots.
I wish her well, but, like most others on the internet (just read the comments under ANY of the articles on the subject online), I believe she should prosper after she has made better choices with her (obviously more significant than mine) ample income. RICH people CRYING POOR is obnoxious to everyone, even people with more money than Wiestand THAT is the real reason that her whining has turned people against her. -

Though I do sincerely wish her the best, I more enjoy seeing how "you people" can get so irked over someone's opinion - whether it be sensible or not we all deserve our own opinion. Of course I know what yours is of me now but I really don't care. Have a nice day.

You New Yorkers are c-razy about real estate.
She isn't exactly living the high life, I'm guessing. She's not J2000. Lo or even J. Law.
She might be wedded to her routine. She never took the plunge and bought land, which is strange but not necessarily a sign of stupidity.

Apparently her rep/manager has said her quote was taken out of context but I just cannot believe at her age and all those years of high profile film and TV work she didn't purchase an apartment. I mean in the late 80s/90s she surely would have been averaging at least 300k a year with her film roles. She did Broadway roles and TV films/mini series. She also stated she doesn't go out of her way to get work and yet she struggles to pay the rent, this broad is something.
Then again maybe she has a home in upstate NY or Connecticut where a lot of wealthy actors own homes.
