In "Sunshine Cleaning" he obviously gained some weight in order to look like the once-hot, now-married and going-to-seed ex-boyfriend of the heroine who shouldn't be having an affair with her, and whom she can/should do better than. I mean, if he'd wanted to look good in the role, he wouldn't have let them film him in the motel room with a beer gut hanging out. (A beer gut he had considerably less of the next year in "A Perfect Getaway," by the way.)
He's looked good in some other recent roles. But I don't think filmmakers (especially at this point in time) cast Steve Zahn to be sexy or handsomethey cast him to be the funny little guy. He's usually the sidekick or 2nd lead to some glam male star in his bigger movies, and funny little guys usually don't get those parts if they're too sexy or handsomethen they'd be competing with the lead guy. -

He seems to be holding up quite well as he approaches 50, but this kind of thing is always subjective. Thankfully he isn't the type to indulge vanity. Nothing is scarier than a middle aged man who gets a facelift.
