Many people die of lung cancer who never smoked. A good friend of mine dad died of it and never smoked a day in his life. So of course he now thinks that if he stops smoking it will be in vain.
One of the men who created Columbo, Richard Levinson died of Lung cancer and he attributed it to the other person who created it William Link who worked closely with who was a big smoker.
Dana Reeves said she could of gotten from second hand smoke. I doubt Eddie Albert was a smoker because he was such a big conservationist. I wonder as I said before maybe he ignored his own health while taking care of his father which is common with many caretakers. I believe that happened with Dana Reeves too.

My understanding is that smoking cigarettes greatly increases your chances of getting lung cancer. So that is basically saying that you can get lung cancer whether you smoke or not. Not all smokers get it, and some non-smokers do, unfair as that seems. I also know more than a few people who had quit smoking for years, and died of lung cancer. I think it also has alot to do with genes, my grandmother smoked 5 packs of filterless Pall Mall cigarettes every day. She never got lung cancer, but instead, fell asleep while smoking and died in a fire at age 70. Grandpa, who never smoked a day in his life, died of complications from emphasema from living with her and breathing all the smoke.

                    To vintagevalor-2:
You are the only person knowing that he smoked at sometime recent to his death. Someone else in this thread (tlc5300) said that he had smoked when he was very young but then quit. Well, we now see he started smoking again not too long ago.

Coming down with lung cancer if you never smoked is water under the bridge at that point and it doesn't matter much - it's a nasty death any way you look at it. My mother got lung cancer, and lived with one lung for 22 (twenty-two) years. Which is unheard of. It seems to me she'd have had an easier time of it if she'd have decided "Well, I've lived long enough, I think I'll give up the ghost now." as it was, she lived so long, she basically suffocated to death.
Cigarette smoking is smelly, dirty, it stains one's teeth, leaves stains on your fingers, burns holes in your clothes, costs many dollars and kissing a smoker is about like kissing an ash tray. It's starting to get to the point that you're a social outcast if you are a smoker.
Its a nasty habit whether or not you get lung cancer or emphysema in the end.

Sometimes we dont do things, yet others know we want to do things, so we dont do them.

                        Hello,
I am a forever fan of Mr Albert, and always will be. From what I have read up on, he was indeed a(heavy) smoker. Smoking is easy to start but so hard to give up. I know that he tried to quit, but it was unsuccessful. And he paid the supreme results for his smoking.
He was a wonderful human being and had a beautiful soul. He helped so many when he was alive. It is so sad that he will never pass our way again. He should of been allowed to live so much longer. He lived his life to the fullest and he enjoyed each day that he was with us here on this planet earth. There will never be another one like him. He was a class act.
I wish that Hollywood would of honored him like he deserved, he was so talented and had so much love in his heart for everyone that walked this planet.
Everything that I now do for the cure of cancer. I do it in his memory.
                        Bless him forever.
                        A fan
