Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Samantha Eggar

    lutherpons — 20 years ago(October 27, 2005 02:27 PM)

Finally! As a long time fan, I read with delight that Ms. Eggar has been cast in the potentially meaty role of Donald Sutherland's wife on the Geena Davis series "Commander In Chief". As someone who NEVER watches TV, I will gladly now tape this show for viewing. There are many possibilities in this role and I'm sure Ms. Eggar will rise to the occasion. Bravo, Ms. E! Watch out, Ms. D!!!

The only report I've seen to date was in the New York Post of October 26. Her first appearance is scheduled for this Tuesday (Nov. 1 @ 9pm). Apparently this is more of a bit to introduce her character. The report says she will gradually be integrated into the story. Her character was descibed as Independent and it was hinted that she could be a foil for both Davis and Sutherland.
Now I'm Really interested in the show.
Miranda: People will be looking for me.
Freddie: I know. But who will be looking for me?

Thanks so much for telling me! I've never seen the show either, but I'll definately watch now. (The way I watched "Cold Case" for the first time when she guest starred as a nun).
BTW: Do have any idea why she left "All my Children" so quickly? I only saw her in one episode (she was in a graveyard), and then she left the show in a matter of months, when she was supposed to be a permanent character. I've always assumed she left the show so quickly because she didn't like living in New York. Do you know anymore details?

            Re: All My Children
I think I read that she was only contracted for a certain period of time and the fact that it was not renewed was mutual. She has lived in LA for years and she is active in theater and radio groups out there.
Also (and PLEASE I mean no offense to anyone) many actors of a certain stature don't want to spend too much time on Daytime TV for fear they'll never get out of it (see MacDonald Carey, Constance Ford, etc.) Ms. Eggar always struck me as an actress who has not been given enough great parts to reach her full potential. Maybe this new gig will do it.
I saw the Cold Case episode. I remember thinking (that can't be Samantha Eggar! As a nun??? And with so little make-up?) she was terrific. However, I prefer to see her cool and glamourous with that wild mane of red hair! (see The Lady in the Car with Glasses and a Gun).
FYI The Ny Post ran another article today that said COMMANDER is on a hiring frenzy. Mark Paul Goesslar (formerly of NYPD Blue) has been hired as a Presidential advisor and the great, lovely Polly Bergen has been hired to play President Geena's mother. Polly starts in a few weeks in a Thanksgiving themed episode.
The paper did not fail to mention the irony that more than 40 years ago Polly Bergen played the first female Chief Executive in "Kisses for My President" with Fred MacMurray as the first First Gentleman. In that 1964 comedy, Polly resigns the Presidency when she learns.she's going to have a baby!!!
            How times change.

Watched her performance last night. She was billed in the credits along with all the other guest stars (there were many). Her turn was brief but it offered many clues on where it could go. She also has great chemistry with Donald Sutherland. But then he's worked great with all of Miss Eggar's peers (Julie Christie, Charlotte Rampling, Jane Fonda, etc.). At any rate, it's good to see Miss E back in a great part.

I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw her name listed. It's been a while since I've seen her. Glad she's on this show.

I agree. I'll be watching for her on "Commander In Chief" now (which I've been watching on and off for Geena Davis and Donald Sutherland).
I fell in love with Samantha Eggar in "The Collector", and enjoyed her turn as 'Marie Picard' on Star Trek: The Next Generation (playing Captain Picard's brother's wife).
She's definitely an actress who deserves to get more prominent and interesting roles in movies and television than she has gotten in the past, so this is definitely good news for her and her fans.
