Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Lucio Fulci

    jockledoodledoo — 16 years ago(July 07, 2009 12:18 PM)

In my view, Fulci's best was his 70's stuff up to Zombie Flesh Eaters / Zombi 2 though I think that film was a severe down turn compared to the complexity and beauty of his earlier films. 1982's "New York Ripper" was a return to form in my view, after the rather tedious string of Catriona MaColl fims (City of the Living Dead / The Beyond / House by the Cemetary), but this was only marred by the appauling "Manhattan Baby" from the same year. A clear case of someone valuing quantity over quality. It would also appear to have been a bad commercial move as well, considering that "Manhattan Baby" was his last film to be released in the U.S - you can see why!
It baffles me to watch "Lizard in a Woman's Skin", "Don't Torture a Duckling" and "Seven Notes in Black" then something like "House of Clocks"what the hell went wrong?
    Best Fulci? Here's my list:
    #1 Don't Torture a Duckling
    #2 Lizard in a Woman's Skin
    #3 Seven Notes in Black
    #4 Zombie Flesh Eaters / Zombi 2
    #5 New York Ripper
    Worst? Let's just be positive!

The Sad thing is is House of Clocks is probably the best of his post-Manhattan Baby films.
Anyway, I love Zombie, Beyond, City of the Living Dead, House by the Cemetery and New York RipperI also dug Four of the Apocalypse and Massacre Timebut I think his best is "Lizard in Womans Skin".
"Dont Torture a Duckling" is a close 2nd, but I always thought the characters were bland. "Lizard" is the only Fulci film I'd consider giving a 4/4.

I hated "Demonia". While it has a FEW decent fun moments, it's pretty boring. To make matters worse, either it was poorly storyboarded(well, it probably wasn't storyboarded at all, but whatever), and the editing was choppy.like when the Father is running one scene, tied down the next and gets ripped apart.
Cat in the Brain is better. In fact, I almost want to like it. It has a good idea, and some scenes are inspired(Fulci walking to the Beyond music), but he overuses stock footage. I detest stock footage.
House of Clocks has some notable flaws(I didn't buy the teens having sex then, there is one lame off-screen death, and at one point a character seems to be teleporting.), but I thought it was a well-done film.

Well, what I love about "City" is the visuals. "Demonia" looks like it was shot on a cheaper camera.
For the record, some people do think "City" is boring. It is nonsensical. Hell, even the ending isn't the worst of it. I mean, two people decide to stop for lunch casually while they're racing against time? But as I said, Fulci's visual flare shined. I didn't get that at all with "Demonia".
You can say I'm missing the point with "Cat in the Brain", but I think you're overanalyzing. The point is how horror films are affecting Fulci, right? Well, I think the stock footage was done simply do to budget constraints.
I'm fine with him showing some stock footage. But I think it's 60-70% stock footage. I was pissed that I had to sit through scenes of "Touch of Death" and (worse) "Ghosts of Sodom" all over again. TOD wasn't bad, but I didn't like it, and GOS is imo, his worst movie. Maybe if they recreated those scenes, it would've been kind of cool. Using stock footage though is lazy and if you've seen those films, a bit of a pace killer.
I haven't seen any of those other films, which (oddly) looks better than all of Fulci's work present in the film. If I did, I may have even been more pissed off.
I understand that some people like it, but I cannot condone a film that's so lazy.

                      1. ZOMBIE - While the acting, dubbing, and characterization are bad, this is a great zombie film. I loved the island setting, the look of the zombies, the gore, and the zombie vs. shark scene.
                      2. CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD - Like THE BEYOND, it's like watching a strange nightmare, only with a lot of gore. I loved the setting and Fulci's hardcore horror style was so on here. Some of the best gore scenes I've ever seen on film.
                      3. FOUR OF THE APOCALYPSE - Coming from someone who is not a fan of westerns, this was a great movie. I loved following these four oddball characters in various adventures throughout West Utah. Fabio Testi is such a charming actor. My favorite scenes are in the ghost town - there's just something about those scenes.
                      4. DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING - One of the greatest giallos ever made. Fulci was brave to bring such a controversial story to life. A beautiful film despite it's ugly subject matter. And, is it weird that my favorite character was a pedophile?
                      5. THE BEYOND - Beautiful nightmarish gore fest. In my opinion, it's on par with SUSPIRIA in terms of it's surreal style, beautiful violence, and unconventional storytelling.
"Cinema is everything to me. I live and breathe films I even eat them!"

                            Young Dracula
