If you can make through the transition from Italian to English than Fulci appeals to me because how he sees things. When your watching a movie your looking through the eyes of the director and how he sees things. Each director comes from different backgrounds and sees the world differently, and Fulci speaks to me like Stanley Kubrick speaks to others.

Now I haven't seen all of Fulci's works, but from what I've seen (namely, Zombi, The Beyond, House by the Cemetery, City of the Living Dead, Don't Torture a Duckling, The New York Ripper) his films are generic and forgettable.
Trash, and not in a good way. Your impression entirely correct. In Fulci, we're dealing with a fourth-rate hack who couldn't direct traffic.
Aside, from Don't Torture a Duckling, I see nothing even remotely special about his work.
One quibble: There's nothing remotely special about Don't Torture A Duckling, either.
Again, I haven't seen all of his movies, such as his comedies or his westerns, but Fulci is mostly known for his horror movies.
They're the sole basis of his popularity, and hardcore gore is their sole basis of popularity. I can dig gore, don't get me wrong, but, here, again, Fulci complete inability to direct cripples even that.
Frankly, I'm not the least bit impressed.
That means you are a more-than-minimally-discerning viewer, and not a candidate for the Fulci cult.

Fulci's films are an acquired taste, you either like them or you don't.

His movies are cartoonish and just plain awful. The only reason he has a cult following is for his overblown focus on gore effects. Another director might have a scene where a man gets whipped with a chain, but only Fulci The Overrated would completely screw up the pace with loving closeups of three(!) separate wounds, devoting at least a couple seconds to each as they break open and expose muscle and bone and ooze blood. Yeah, maestro, we got it the first time - when you hit a guy with a chain real hard, bad things happen.
I've been trying to figure out why he has a following for thirty years now, and am still coming up blank.

I know I'm in the minority, but I think Fulci's best movie is FOUR OF THE APOCALYPSE. It's not a gorefest (although there is some), but it has a really ghetto soundtrack and a very ominous atmosphere. I DIG IT!

For me, the number one reason is atmosphere. Lucio's movies have that by the truck load!

I actually prefer Massacre Time to Four of the Apocalypse.

If you think that Duckling is good then, I think that you should see A Lizard in a Woman's Skin, The Psychic, Beatrice Cenci and 4 of the Apocalypse.
Different people see different stuff in his films. Most of "fans" have only seen the five films other than Duckling you mentioned. That is not bad, but he was able to do so much more. I do love this period also, so don't misunderstand me. CotLD is in my top 5 favorite movies ever
The five films you thought were forgettable, I thought were memorable. For the most part they had excellent soundtracks, large amounts of gore, great atmosphere, beautiful cinematography. I think that the build up and creating of atmosphere were more important than story line in these films. If you are looking for more story oriented films from him see the four I mentioned at the beginning.

Interesting points, CHACO. However, I must disagree with you. Not only that, but I'm reminded of another film that I absolutely despise that is similar to Fulci's films - BLOOD FOR DRACULA. I DON'T UNDERSTAND, IT'S JUST A RIDICULOUS B-MOVIE! WHERE IS THE SCRIPT?

In this case I would have to think that you are the moron since Blood for Dracula is not directed by Fulci.

Turkish, I can understand where you are coming from, if you hate Fulci I highly recommend avoiding Takashi Miike, because if you find Fulci boring, you will find him unbearable.

I am not even sure what to say about that, not everyone can love a masterpiece such as BfD. "You should lose that, uh virginity of yours before he gets to you."
For you I would highly recommend watching Four of the Apocalypse, I have a feeling that you will find Tomas Milian's performance inspiring.
