Makes perfect sense. I wish he'd read the books. He's nowhere as calm as book Dumbledore is. But hey, his choice. His acting did improve from the earlier movies where he took on the role. -

His job is not to play the Dumbledore from the books. His job is to play the Dumbledore that the filmmakers want on screen, and that can be found in the script.
Ralph Fiennes and Alan Rickman don't read the books either.
J.K. Rowling has no issue with his portrayal of Dumbledore. You cannot, one on hand, call yourselves the defender of the books, then accuse Rowling of being a starstruck author who prostituted her books out. -

Tfilm78, actually you're wrong. Rickman does read each book just before filming. He's said it in interviews. I don't know about Fiennes, but I'm not big fan of his.
And regarding playing the Dumbledore "that the filmmakers want on screen?" Sorry, but one of the directors (from three, I think) gave Gambon the leeway to play the part as GAMBON wanted (that was mentioned in one of the "First Look" things on cable/satellite just prior to the movie's release). So put the blame where it belongs! Gambon is just plain WRONG for the role. -

Um, probably because he was in New Zealand working on LOTR when they started shooting Harry Potter.
As for why he wasn't cast after Richard Griffiths died, he probably was already working on something else.

people keep saying oh this one and that one should have been cast when richard griffiths died' but im confued how would uncle vervons death open up the spot for dumbledore. hello richard harris was the first dumbledore and he did do wanderfully i thought, he had that twinkle in his eye he felt right. i was sad when the 3rd movie came out it just felt weird, i did warm up to gambon later but it was just never the same. richard griffiths (uncle vernon) is alive and well i think.

I think Richard Harris (the first dumbledore) had some bad opinions about Ian McKellen and didn't want him to be dumbledore, and after he died they just respected his wish and didn't cast Ian McKellen (or so I've heard, sorry if im misinformed).
