I know, really! Her best scene is the one where Dorothy's locked in the tower and she sees Auntie Em's visage in the crystal ball. I love when Dorothy's trying to catch Auntie Em's attention, only to have it replaced by the Witch's nasty mug. The best part of that scene is when the Witch starts cackling and turns to the audience as if to say "I'm coming for you next!"

And certainly one of the most iconic. I wonder though if Ms. Hamilton's fantastic performance was fully appreciated back in 1939 - I think a lot of her fame for OZ comes from it's annual television broadcast, sort of like Butterfly McQueen in GWTW who didn't get much attention upon initial release of the movie.

She did indeed. Some people are so good at chewing the scenery it's a wonder there was anything left for the other cast members to do/act in/act against; this Margaret Hamilton did very well, and for this she does indeed deserve to be remembered; kudos to her, and she will be remembered for all time.

Well she made my first viewing of Wizard Oz a memorable one, because I never finished it after she appeared in Munchkinland! She did the role really well, and was wicked looking.

Scared me when I was little.
A great movie villain because that's what she is. An evil character who is willing to kill to get what she wants (remember sky writing Die Dorothy). None of this p.c. b.s you get with Wicked.

It was "Surrender Dorothy" that was written. But you bring up PC and I understand some of Hamilton's lines were cut (about 12) because they felt that the Witch was too frightening for children to watch.
And she actually wrote: Surrender Dorothy or Die, but they cut that part out again for the fright aspect. So, it was left as Surrender Dorothy.

I think many kids found her frightening and others could laugh because she was so over the top. I've grown to like the character because she is so wicked but the image still startles me when I see it without warning.

I start laughing immediately. Margaret Hamilton (God, I love the sound of the name) played it completely tongue-in-cheek.
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.
