Did the media invent this, or did Emmy specifically say this?
Why turn this into a social justice or feminism thing? Hollywood actors (men, women, black, white etc.) and their agents negotiate fees all the time and fees ultimately come down to that actor's draw, talent, and how savvy an agent is with the negotiation. No more, no less.
In an industry where somebody's worth only corresponds with their looks, likeability, and/or ability to pretend ("acting"), and those attributes are ultimately determined by an audience (ratings or ticket sales), there's absolutely no such thing as "equal".
Sure, equal pay for two factory assembly-line workers who do the exact same job makes sense, but equal pay for actors in different roles makes absolutely no sense.

Equal pay is not uncommon for the cast of a tv show when they their roles are relatively equal in screen time. Showtime was willing to give her equal pay to Macy, however she went above and beyond and demanded back pay for all the years she was paid less (and agreed to it(, which is absurd. She was an unknown and didnt deserve it until after putting in the years. Just like any other profession, your pay goes up after you build experience and prove yourself.

I think it was incredibly smart and brave of her to request back pay on top of equal pay. She had confidence that the network would see her value to the series on the whole, and she's definitely earned it. She carries the series and has had much more screen time than Macy.

Oh you think it's "brave" to demand more moneyobviously you've never had anyone work for you.
That would be like if I went up to my boss and said " technically I work harder than you, so I should not only get paid just as much is you, but more than you."
Brave is not the word I'd use

In your analogy you're referring to Emmy asking her 'boss' (the showrunners or producers) for equal pay / back pay. She didn't request this of her bosses, she requested this TO her bosses regarding her CO-WORKER. A co-worker that films less hours than her. Your argument makes zero sense.
