I just saw him in a Studio One production called "Away From It All." It was a live television show done in 1950 and appears to be his second starring role. He was excellent in it, very relaxed and cool, kind of like Paul Newman.
In the show he played an airplane pilot who lands on a strange island, where a small group of sophisticated people have created a small Shangra-La.
I once saw him on broadway in "Happy Birthday, Wanda June," a play by Kurt Vonnegut. I remember he was very good, except for one moment where he forgot his lines. He turned to the audience and started to laugh. The audience laughed with him. Then he easily stepped right back into character and the play continued.
Like Darren McGavin, he was never a big star, but he made every part he ever played better and his intelligence and likeable nature always shined through.
