It would've been a much greater crime to disrespect the mustache.
What's the Spanish for drunken bum?

Romero had the clout to refuse shaving his whiskers and still get the role. He must have really impressed the producers with his Joker portrayal. He was perfect for the role. When you're that good you get what you want.

Fact: That was over 40 years ago!
Question: What difference does it make at this late date?
Opinion: The mustache was hardly noticeable u1908nder the "Joker" makeup.
Opinion: You probably wouldn't be asking about it if you were aware of Romero's
            enormous
body of work prior to his
            "Batman"
appearances. He was Romero, he could get away with it and without being thought temperamental. His mustache was as much a signature as is Tom Selleck's now.
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things,"
Of atoms, stars and nebul, of entropy and genes.

Yeah, except Tom Selleck has shaven off his mustache for roles instead of being a baby about it like Romero.

I agree, he should've shaved the stupid thing off. He always could've grown it back when the show was not in production.

WHO CARES if he shaved his moustache?
Obviously it meant alot to him to keep it. At that time in his life he probably wasn't all that desperate for a job as he had been in his earlier years!
He was a brilliant actor and it never made any difference to all the people especially the kids who loved him in that role!!!

Well the "Batman" TV show was total camp so him not shaving the moustache was no big deal. My bigger problem with it was Adam West. His acting was good but he was so THIN and not even remotely in good shape. Come on! You're playing a super hero! Bulk up! Even Burt Ward was in good shape:)
