Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — George Miller

    graograman22 — 21 years ago(November 20, 2004 03:21 PM)

I just saw THE ROAD WARRIOR for a zillionth time after some years, and I had to run here to pay this guy some compliments, but, WHERE THE HECK ARE THE FANS??? Whereas untalented and overrated people like, hum I don't know, Guy Ritchie or Tim Burton (accept it) are making people type their praises in return for their (doubtful) pleasent cinematic experiences, here we have Dr Miller completely alone and unappreciated.
    COME ON PEOPLE!!!
We are talking about the guy who crafted that amazing segment in TWILIGHT ZONE THE MOVIE, remember that? The monster on the airplane wing, John Lithgow going berserk, the fat police officer and that annoying brat with the scary puppet? The nightmarish feeling to it, the beautiful kinetic photography, the lighting, the impecable orchestration to the late and oh so great mr Goldsmith, all that and more is pure GENIOUS This is a man who has worked his entire career creating new worlds out of PIECES of film and unforgetable images like very few people working out there.
The Mad Max films have a feel to it that no one working today has ever come close to achieve. The use of montage in his Road Warrior is astonishing, just pay attention to the pure visual telling of this post apocalyptic world, this film is almost silent (I'm talking DIALOGUE here), but yet his unique universe carves on the eye like anything else.
THW WITCHES OF EASTWICK is still one of the most beuatiful and entertaining pieces of cinema spawned from the 80's, and after seeing what was done back then with A grade stars and budgets makes you just want to bring back this kind of talent from the ancient world of entertaining so how come no one has? I feel that Miller only works on what he feels like working. He doesn't just take any jobs, oh no, he takes his time, and that time and thought are so visible on every frame of his movies. Lorenzo's Oil is still one of the most touching stories I've seen in the realm of BASED ON A TRUE STORY ABOUT A DISEASE, because in his hands the quest of the poor kid's cure becomes something of mythical proportions. The ending of that film still gives me goosebumps, as everything else in this filmmaker's career.
And don't even get me started on the BABE films Just look for my messeges there if you care about my opinion
Bottom line is, GEORGE MILLER is among the greatest. He deserves acknowledgment from critics and audiences and5b4 he deserves them NOW. Please let's not wait for him to be too old to enjoy it or DEAD.
I know some of you outthere agree with me, so let's just talk about the guy with pride in our voices He deserves it.

Totally agree with you, Miller is one of the best, his diversity alone deserves applause (how does one go from Mad Max to Lorenzo's Oil?) It's a shame he can't get a break on Fury Road, he's spent fifteen years developing the story and came so close to getting it made.

I think that the problem with 'Fury Road' was the timing. If you didn't know, the production start date was slated for summer 2003 in southwest Africa, and if you recall the war in Iraq had just started that spring. The studio and production team decided that with everything happening in that part of the world, and the lack of security from possible terrorist attacks in Africa, they pulled out and decided to reschedule. Also, during the summer of 2003, Mel Gibson was already surrounded by controversy about his upcoming film, 'The Passion of the Christ' and he spent the rest of the year deflecting the criticism. But I think that Fury Road will be made eventually. Right now, Mel Gibson is the hottest star in the world, and the Mad Max series is still very popular. Hollywood still wants to make this (they'll cash in big time) and people will come out in droves to see it.
(Just look at Indiana Jones 4, it keeps getting pushed back, but there's no way they're NOT going to make it. It's all scheduling.)

I saw Mad Max 2 when it came out in 1981 at the show, and thought the guy who directed this film the great. George Miller is one of the best in the field of directing. I love his style. He's the man

Awesome director but lets face it, he's hardly prolific. maybe losing Byron Kennedy knocked his confidenceremember he had to draft in George Olgville to co-direct MM3all very frustrating, i remember reading an interview with Spielberg who'd just seen MM2 and the man was gobsmacked, mentioned Miller directing chase scenes in Raiders 2. All very frustrating.

George is great! The Road Warrior is an absolute classic. The chase at the end is one of the best action scenes ever.

I have just discovered this thread and am now going to put my 2 cents in.
I have always loved George Millers work, some of the best stuff. I grew up with Babe as well and has always been a great family movie.
Now here comes Happy Feet though, One of the best, actually best movies that I have seen, it left such a great message, raised my awareness on everything with the enviroment, it has also made me find one of my passions, Penguins, have not been able to stop reading about them since I saw it, and I have watched the DVD 25 times in 7 days alone without getting bored of it.
It had a great storyline, The lyrics played a part in that, the music was very well chosen, enjoyed every song on it.
The animation is top notch and the camera work is some b68of the best on animation. If you can go for 30 seconds without changing the shot angle while still effectively keeping the audience entertained and progressing the movie you must be doing something right.
To see how strongly I appreciate George Miller's work on this Supurb movie see the Happy Feet thread and look for my posts, my name is BiggestHappyFeetFan or ashwalker (accidently created two accounts)

                          Best Movie in My Opinion
                          George Miller is my Idol

I haven't liked anything Tim Burton has made in a number of years, but he is talented as well. Batman? Hello?

But most of his films are sh!t.
The first Mad Max has some cool car crashes, but that's it. The plotting and characterizations are two-dimensional and the acting is crappy.
The Road Warrior is genuinely great, but it's still a B-movie and that's about as close as he got to a masterpiece.
Beyond Thunderdome has some great sequences but doesn't hang together.
Witches of Eastwick is an embarrassment and never goes beyond the level of cheap gags and even cheaper looking FX.
Lorenzo's Oil is well made but feels like a TV movie.
Babe 2 is the Exorcist II of the 90s.
Happy Feet and it's sequel are just dumb, CGI kid's movies.
That's it. The guy's a hack. Giving him a free pass for The Road Warrior is like giving M. Night Shyamalan a free pass for Unbreakable or Robert Rodriguez a free pass for Sin City. You're still willfully ignoring the fact that the majority of their output is poor to say the least, and Miller's is poorer than most.
