Does anyone know the reason behind Laura leaving ER? Was this her decision or TPTB? It was a big shocker to me since I haven't read any ER gossip in a while. Is this a temporary thing or will her character be gone for good?

It looks as if she left of her own accord, to concentrate on her excellent directing:

A bummer, though. She was awesome. Kerry Weaver was the best a-hole on the show since they whacked Romano! -

I HATE THIS!!! Laura Innes and Maura Tierney are the best actors on the show!!! Laura Innes will be MISSED. Kerry Weaver's blend of steel and compassion was wonderfully excecuted by the gifted Innes. I wish her much success in the future.

It also took me a while to like her character, ada0nd also thought her turning point was when Sandy died. She's as close to an original cast member as you can get, so it's time for her to go so they can make room for new cast members. It used to bug me, but I have gotten over it. I really don't want the show to end. I think cast changes is what has kept this show alive. This way you can get new storylines constantly. ER is one of the few shows to never disappoint me. They have always delivered what they promised, in my opinion. I love it.

Watching the series late, she was exceptional on ER.

I agree. I never watched ER until recently, so I had the chance to watch all the shows in rapid succession. She was by far THE best character on the show, and also one of the best actress AND directors. I haven't like her much in other shows she has been in (e.g. the "Event"), but that seems to be crappy material and flawed writing, not her ability to act.
