she was, and prob still is, controversial, so I never saw that as a major slapping on Harty. but I bet its what helped change things that the design for chatshows had all seats arranged beside the interviewers so that all guests where facing him or her, so that its not seen as 'rude' with their back kinda turned on a guest.

She said in her memoir that they'd done a rehearsal before the show and all the guests were to sit on one side of the host, but it was changed at the last minute. I don't think she should have hit him (or "sissy kitten pawing" as another poster said), but it is rude to turn your back on one of your guests and chat with the other two as if they're a nobody. Grace was definitely off before the host was being rude to her (she said she hadn't slept for in 3 days and got a cold after filming a long scene outdoors for a movie the night before), but he was still wrong for the way he treated her.
