Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Vinnie Jones

    mostyn38 — 17 years ago(June 22, 2008 10:59 AM)

Vinnie is never going to win any oscars, but he is an excellent 'hard man' actor.
When he was a pro footballer he was exactly the same. He was not the most technically gifted player on the pitch, but he always gave 100% and was a very hard tackler of the ball. Many opposition players were scared of him, which made him a valuable asset on the pitch. I saw him play 3-4 times, and always enjoyed watching him clatter the opposition.
If you've not seen the picture of him and Paul Gascoigne which is very famous in the UK. It's worth a look.

He had a pretty tough upbringing and has worked very hard to get where he is. Before becoming a footballer he was a brick layer. I once saw an interview with him in which he said 'if you asked anyone on a building site what they would like to be, they would say a Rock Star, Professional Footballer or Film Star. Two out of three isn't bad'

Rubbish player and a thug to those who'd let him bully them. Lots weren't scared of him though. He can't act either. There was a lot poor about X-Men 3 - he epitomised how bad it was.

Yeah , crap footballer, played internationally for Wales, and they were poor, if Guy Ritchie hadn't cast him in Lock , Stock we might have been sparred ever hearing of this man ever again, im sure Hollywood will eventually tire of him and he'll end up with a role in Eastenders or some other garbage.

Yeah, he's hardcore about his roles. I was an extra in his movie Year One, and he was really intimidating. There was one part where he was roughly pushing his way through the crowd, and he practically knocked me over. But I don't care; I was pushed by Vinnie Jones!

The rule is 'Let the acting speak'.
                  The acting spoke.
                  It stunk.
Yet another pitiful example of the modern day hero worship of bullys we hold up as deities in western society. A fine example to us all, that loutish behaviour, threats and violence can reward you with money, fame and notoriety.
What kind of a society makes Vinnie Jones a movie star? A sick one is the answer. I'm partly responsible, I went to see 'Lock, Stock'
                  He's hardly Ghandi, is he..?

Hmm, yeah. It's such a shame that his valiant attempt to replicate Gandhi was in vain. Also, notice how I spelt Gandhi- then notice how you spelt it. If youre going to be an arrogant little ***** then at least put some effort into it.
Try to remember that being opinionated doesnt make you right. And posting on an imdb message board doesnt put you in the majority. Just because you say something, doesnt make it true. I could go on.
Long story short, Vinne Jones isnt even a movie star. Hes a character actor. Any moron with half a brain can see that. And the character he plays- in pretty much every film hes in- happens to be one that suits such a loutish actor. I have no trouble watching a genuine tough guy play a tough guy. And at the same time I have no problem watching someone who isnt a genuine tough guy play a tough guy. All I care about is how they sell themselves in the role. What theyre like up on screen, in character. Any loutish behavior behind the scenes is irrelevant. The fact that you seem so concerned with it only proves your predetermined narrow-mindedness, and its obvious that no matter how good an actor he is (or isnt) you dont really give a crap. Because you already have a grudge against the guy for things hes done off-screen.
                    And dude?
Yet another pitiful example of the modern day hero worship of bullys we hold up as deities in western society.
GTFO. Seriously. If you knew what you were talking about you might not come off as such a prat. Find me someone who holds Vinnie Jones up as a deity and Ill find you a chick with three boobs.

                      Quite right.
                      I stand corrected.
No need to be rude now, was there?

Yeah an over use of the word deity, but genius is flung around with as much abandon. One of the guys in this thread wrote how happy he was to be nearly pushed over, because it was by Vinnie Jones. That's a kind of hero worship. An undeserved one too in my opinion.
Jones is a lucky joe who did alright in Lock Stock, playing himself and being given line reads by Guy Ritchie. He may not need the line reads so much now, hopefully you get better with practice, but he is still a long way away from being credible.
Punching all and sundry in real life does not help either.

haha so that's where they got the idea for him to do the same in Gone in 60 Seconds
he's a cool guy wish he'd get better roles

He got the roles that suited him. He'd be miscast as anything other than a big, gritty tough guy.
Fact is, his Lock Stock co-star Statham could do everything Jones did, and better. Statham got the career everyone expected Jones to grow into.
