The funniest parts of the Bond movies were always in Q's lab. The series has suffered a great loss. But I do think that John Cleese will make a very good replacement.

John Cleese is doing a great jobbut I think out of respect for Desmond, the title? of "Q" should have been retiredI know there have been a lot of "M"s and such, but Desmond was there was most of the 20 someodd movies. Cleese could still do his job as "R"right?

John Cleese fits the role for Bond's hi-tech gadget specialist perfectly but I'd still rather see him use the name R - so he doesn't look like Desmond's replacement, but instead, Q's replacement.

Agreed,Cleese looks close to Desmond but he tries way too hard to be like him. Q was the longest running actor in the JB series and Q was always my favorite character, thats probably why i found Die Another Day was so pathetic. It was sad when he left and even worse when he died and i think no JB movie will ever be the same without him.
Cleese should try to be different because it looks like he is trying to invade on Llewelyns' turf and no one will ever be better.
              Well Thats What I Think

Desmond gave the Bond films continuity; he single handedly gave the later films credibility. In this sense, he's more important than Connery or any of the actors who portrayed Bond. He is missed!

But he wasn't called Q was he, just Major Boothroyd, Desmond debuted the 'Q' role, and he was just fantastic. Whenever Q appears in a JB movie, I spring to attention and he tells Bond to Pay attention. I LOVED him. Bond is never the same without him.

Yup he took a very minor character Major Boothroyd the armorer and made him an essential character Q the gadget master. He will always be missed.

He was irreplaceable but to say he is more important to James Bond films than Sean Connery is taking it a bit too far don't you think?
