Personally I think what happened was that people saw all these "clues" that weren't deliberate at all (when you have something as visually interesting as the Sgt Pepper cover, all sorts of things can b seen that aren't deliberate), and The Beatles found this funny so decided to deliberately throw a few extra ones in to confuse people even more.

If Paul is dead who was it that I saw and talked to at Barkley center on Sunday night in my beloved Brooklyn. It was an 71 yr old guy that can still give a kick ass concert. Who can play a mean guitar and piano and can still sing. He started at 8:40 pm and sang after song with no stops to 11:30 at night. Plus he seems like a cool old guy. But then again so am I except he is better looking, and I can't play any instraments and I can't sing for beep

Well, footread, I don't think that any/many think Paul is actually dead.
I think the thrust of the thread was to ask if the hoax was precipitated or egged on by the Beatles themselves.
John had some active participation in the hoax, because there is absolutely no mistaking that at the end of I'm So Tired, there is a backwards tape played of John saying "Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him".
This is not some interpretive, hopeful, belief like "Number 9" in Rev 9 sounds a lot like "Turn Me on Dead man" when played backwards.
The inclusion after I'm So Tired is a backwards recording, and it unmistakenly is John saying "Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him".
This is the only irrefutable fact that proves that at least John knew something.
Every other clue is subject to interpretation. This one is definitve.

No it is not different, and that is not what he says. He actually spoke (or mumbled) something in French that (sorta) sounds like what you (and several others) have stated. Actually, the last part is "miseur, miseur, miseur." He wrote the French phrase, spoke it backwards, and then re-recorded so that what you hear playing the record forwardsis the spoken French phrase backwards. This is similar to what he did with the earlier ('66) song "Rain", but more advanced and clever. He loved using this experimentation; and he had better and more important things to do with his time and art than to promote a rumor that HADN'T EVEN EXISTED YET". The-rumor didn't start until after the album "I'm so tired" was part of was released.

The Paul is dead urban legend is interesting. But if Paul died and was replaced by a lookalike why would The Beatles leave any clues?

First of all, obviously people are "catch(ing) on" by the multitudes; and they are still finding yet more "clues".
Second of all, The Beatles were the most successful band in the workd, far outselling even their competition. Nevermind that they were more interested in expanding their skills as world proclaimed artists than putting ridiculou little clues to basically take a dump on their own desgns, some of these "clues" (the backwards messages) are actually impossible to pull off. If you play a recording backwards, from time to time what you hear someone say or sing can sound like real words (sorta), but to actually say that something impossibly can say another coherent thing backwards, when the spelling of those words do not actually match what you think it is saying, then you are simply "hearing things". For example "I love you" spelled backwards is "u oy evol". This could, under the right (or wrong) circumstances sound to someone like " you are evil". It's called phoenetics.
All the clues are coincidance only, and each one has an explainztionthat has nothing to do with the theories that these people that know little to nothing about The Beatles say they are. Either these people are ill, bored, mentally/emotionally challenge, doing it for their own attention (as opposed to your theory that The Beatles were doing it for attention; or better record sales), or all of the above. The stunts were unneccesary, and The four men had better things-bigger and more important things- to do with their time than to waste it pointlessly trying to do something like you suggest.
