I believe Simon Monjack was involved, one way or the other.
Everyone who knew Simon Monjack hated him.
His behaviour following her death was also very strange, trying to block an autopsy being performed etc.
Their relationship is the strangest thing ever. Nobody who had crossed paths with Simon Monjack had a single positive thing to say about him. Following the marriage, they were rarely seen in public together and she cut off many of her former friends. He had no career to speak of - his only directing credit is an obscure British Z-grade film whose only review is extremely negative and his credit for "Factory Girl" was utterly bogus and part of a blackmailing scam. He also had a very shady reputation as a pathological liar, a thief and a petty criminal and conman among other things. He was also reportedly thousands of $ in debt.
Oh, and last but not least, he was
incredibly
ugly. Not just your average everyday ugly, but I mean vomit inducingly grotesque - the face of nightmares!
It really is the weirdest thing ever that she married this horrible character who had seemingly NOTHING going for him. I find it hard to watch Brittany Murphy in any films now, given the thought that she ended her life while married to this monster.
