I was a little surprised to see this in the trivia section. Does anyone know how he came to learn Italian, and if so, are there any t.v. programs showing him speaking Italian? Thanks for any response.

Don't be surprised if it isn't true. IMDB has a habit of putting up false user information.

It is true. He lived in Italy for a while. Thats where he adopted his son, Hugh. He also knew a little Yiddish as well. Read his autobiography, its very good.

I remember reading somewhere that he pushed for an episode to be written where the Bunkers go to Italy just so he could return for a while but it never came to pass. He lived in Italy throughout the 60's and was living there when he was offered the role. He only accepted the role on the condition that he would get a free ticket back to Italy if the show wasn't picked up. He also lived in Ireland for a while where he also went to college. He came from an Irish upper-middle class family and was a staunch liberal Democrat. He was very different from the character that made him famous other than being from Queens, New York City.
