Did you know rapping originated from “toasting” in Jamaican reggae?
A good example of a pop song with toasting would be red red wine by UB40.
I personally find toasting to be more melodic, but that’s just because I’m not a huge fan of the disco/r&b backing of most hip hop/rap.
I think rap/hip hops heyday was in the 80s and 90s with groups like Grandmaster Flash, De La Soul, Geto Boyz, Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang Clan, and OutKast. Before Kanye and Drake came along and ruined the genre. -
