Unfortunately, her claim to fame was marrying Tom Cruise

I haven't seen 'Abandon' and I know it has low ratings, definitely not the best movie made. But I think I'll rent it for the sake of Katie Holmes performance.
'Abandon' is a good film. I own it on DVD & have watched it many times. I was surprised that Katie Holmes could carry a film, but she does and does it well.
Its not a perfect film, but I like it a lot. It doesn't really deserve its low ratings.
As for whether Katie's marriage hurt her career, I would have to say yes.
Before people even knew about that Scientology mess, they seemed to view the couple as a dirty 'old man' marrying a 'teen'. That was the way it seemed even to me, he seemed much too old for herin age AND personality, if that makes sense.
Then the Scientology began..and Katie changed. And she all but disappeared off people's popularity lists after that.
I, for one, hopes she gets herself back together again. I like her as an actress.

Yes I totally agree with you. She is nothing special, honestly Michelle Williams was the most talented DC actor, the others are just generic. And Pieces of Aprilwas AWFUL, so don't tel me she had some aspiring Indie career ahead of her. As for all of her other moviesI pretty much hate them or she was my least favorite character (Thank you for smoking, Batman Begins). People blame Tom Cruise for her failure to appear in the sequel to Batman, but I honestly feel the higher ups recognized she wasn't the star grabbing quality the needednot that Maggie Gyllenhaal is much better, but Katie is justboring? I've never met anyone who says "Oh I just LOVE Katie Holmes"she has Tom to thank for the continuation of publicity and any roles she receives thereafter because with the pool of talented attractive actresses out there, she is definitely at the bottom. Only reason she gets roles here on out is because of mass public recognition from her high profile marriage/divorce. Fact!

I totally agree that Katie is nothing special, and that she really does have Tom to "thank" for the attention that she has because she is now a bigger name because of her marriage/divorce to him, than she was before they got together. It amazes me that now you can't go a day without hearing about her, when before her marriage to Tom, she was just another actress that wasn't that memorable. I think more people actually became aware of her simply because Tom Cruise made such a big deal over her. Yes, she had her fans from her DC days, but aside from that, she wasn't exactly a household name. Even if she does start getting more movie offers and everything, I don't think that it will last long for her, because she was never a box office draw, and I think the popular opinion of her is that she is a mediocre actress, so I don't see too much box office success for her.

Let's face it, most of her movies are terrible. If she hadn't married him, she probably would have fallen off the radar by now. He's about the only thing that kept her name in the news.
Quite the opposite really, he ruined her career by crushing her whole being. She will thrive now I predict.

I think the fact that she married Tom Cruise ruined her career. Everyone realized th5b4ere was something kind of creepy about the whole situation and I believe it turned people off. She may get hired again but I imagine she's very well off at this point.
If she told the real story, I believe it would make for an interesting read. Not from Tom's perspective, since he's the most boring actor I can think of but Katie has a story to tell.
