I am new to Mad Men and just now to the finale of season 2 and I love Betty. I think they went a little to the other extreme with her going from mousy to overly headstrong but in my opinion January plays an early 60's woman to a tee.
I havent seen her in many other things but based on the interviews I have seen with her it is kind of a stretch to play Betty so in that vain I think she is a great actor. -

Having just rewatched season one, I think her Emmy nomination was fully deserved. I think she's too associated with the dour, irritating housewife that Betty has (purposely) become, and it's mostly forgotten that she began as a vulnerable, contemplative and sweet character. I'll confess I was guilty of as much, and had overlooked that she was arguably the most sympathetic character of the first season.

I think she's good in Mad Men, but she was awful in First Class. It wasn't a great film anyway but she was very flat in the role. Emma Frost wasn't written as well as she is in (some of) the comics but unfortunately January didn't imbue her with the characteristics I associate with Emma Frost mainly intelligent, cunning, conflicted and more than a little bitchy.
These are the only two things I've seen her in so she's 50/50 for me. Good in Mad Men, bad in First Class. I have nothing against her though.

I think she was ok in Madmen but was generally the weakest of the cast overall, so im kinda happy she is not a big part of it no longer atleast so far for me at Season 6 where im at.
I watched Seeking Justice with nick cage and her last night and realised how poor an actor she really is though. She is wooden and somewhat reminiscent of her character in Mad Men in that movie. I have to say she one of the dullest female actors ive ever seen after seeing that movie though, theres no nerve in her character potrayals at all, she seems to struggle to create any sort of higher temper in any of her characters which is especially obvious in Seeking Justice. Pretty much all her scenes in that movie she is either extremely dull or struggle to even be able to fight back in a believable way when the bad guys come after/grab her. Seeing her suddenly use the pistol in that movie was just cringe worthy after seeing her throughout it.
She was also the weakest character in X-Men, she seemed like the Yeomans from the early episodes of Star Treks 60s show, someone just appearing for 1 episode and gone after that. She is a "Fodder/limbo" actor to me, someone who levitates between the worst tier actors and those that aroudn for 1 episode of some weak tv show. -

Very bland, very wooden. Obviously type cast for Mad Men role cause she looks very 60's "Grace Kelly" type. Even in Mad Men, after a while it's easy to see she is clueless about developing a character. Another lucky model type who got a great part.

yes i though it was just me.but yep i really hate her.she ruins everything.if she knows how to act that means that i should get an oscar.she's terrible.beautiful but in holywood almost every woman is beautiful.SHE JUST CAN'T ACT!!!!!OMG!!!!

I think her acting sucks, too. And to be honest I don't think she's unusually pretty or anything. She is average and a terrible actress. I don't get the hype with her. During this episode of Mad Men they have said she looks like Grace Kelly like three or four times and I just LOL at that. Please.

I have not gotten to the newest episode where they say that but I don't see the similarity at all. Grace Kelly was also a good actress though so I don't think they have anything in common. One of the most annoying things she does in the show Mad Men is when she is trying to act angry, she closes her eyes. Who the hell looks down or closes their eyes when they argue with someone; its insane to watch. Horrible actress.
Due to current economic conditions, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off. -

That's Vaughn's fault. He's a terrible director; I thought the dialogue and mood were childish and her role was purely exploitative. January Jones is a very good actress, but you have to watch her as Betty on "Mad Men" to see it.

she's got that princess look, not super sexy or super cute, not funny, great for mad men until her and don have a fight and it just looks silly because of her bad acting, I mean with anyone 111celse we might see some nice soprano time drama but nope, remember edie falco and james gandolfini arguments, wow, watching mad men almost anytime a female actress is on screen they steal her thunder, she's still a great fit for mad men, I mean you can understand why don cheats on her all the time even though she's so "pretty"

She is not a good actress, but I dont think shes that bad either, shes average imo. The fact that shes was nominated for an emmy means nothing btw, awards schmawards. They gave Jenn Lawrence an Oscar (not an inch better or worse than January Jones) so all bets are off.

Can't act worth a damn? I disagree. I've heard others like you say this but never once a I watched her in a role and go she can't act. She is icy but that doesn't mean you can not act. It is in her personality to be icy.
She is no different than many actors. George Clooney is always George Clooney, Brad Pitt is always Brad Pitt, Julia ROberts is always Julia Roberts. The question is do you want January Jones in your movie and if you do you get January Jones. I felt she was great in the Icy roll she played in Xmen.

If you're "icy" as a person, the whole point of acting is to be able to be the opposite.
Perhaps she hasn't had the chance be anything but "icy" yet, but to liken her to the above mentioned actors and actresses is just ridiculous.
