The man born Garry Kent Masciarelli (that's the spelling that Wikipedia gives, while IMDb gives a slightly different spelling) was widely known as a renaissance man in the entertainment industry: producing, directing, acting, and other stuff.
Happy Days
is111c the only show of his that I've seen. Of his directorial works, I've seen
Overboard
,
Pretty Woman
,
The Princess Diaries
and
The Princess Diaries 2
. The first one is the one that I really recommend, the second one is overrated, and the final two were more interesting than one might expect (although it was weird to think that the creator of Fonzie was directing a movie about a princess). I saw part of
Nothing in Common
, but it was so boring that I didn't even bother to finish it. Among his onscreen appearances, I particularly enjoyed his turn as the casino manager in Albert Brooks's
Lost in America
, and his guest appearance as a slimy executive exploiting Apu's children on
The Simpsons
.
Basically, it must have been fun for Hector Elizondo to always get to work with Garry Marshall.
I kind of wish that his family had kept the original family name.

The Fonzie character on
Happy Days
was originally named Masciarelli after Marshall. But calling him "Mash" for short would clash with the name of the currently running CBS show
MASH
, so Fonzie's surname was changed to "Fonzarelli" instead.
Nice to see Garry Marshall's mother, Marjorie Marshall, in a small part on a
Happy Days
episode last night. She also turned up on an episode of
The Odd Couple
as an elderly tap-dancer. And Marshall also appeared in a brief spot on
The Odd Couple
as Werner Turner, the brother of Penny Marshall's character Myrna Turner (their sister Ronny Hallin appeared in the same scene as
sister Verna Turner).
I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!
