You make a very good point. The writer of the article states that Christopher is supposed to be obtaining a birth certificate from the hall of records to prove his claim. I'll keep you posted.

She doesn't have a kid and it likely that she was never pregnant when she claimed she was (the pregnancy she said she miscarried). She also, as noted upthread, lied about being married.
She talks a little about the fake marriage bit in the book "Hollywood Lesbians" by Boze Hadleigh. She is one of the queer actresses he profiles. (Yes, for the two of three people who didn't know, Gerry Mulligan was more of a for public appearances boyfriend than a boyfriend-boyfriend.) It's a great interview, in which she talks about the way Liz Smith, the legendary lesbian columnist, used to pressure Sandy to come out even though Liz was closeted herself. She also talks about the people who guided her career trying to stop her from taking the lesbian part in "The Fox" because for many years gay actors were strongly advised to never play gay, out of fear it would cause their own closet doors to be pried open. She's over the moon when the interviewer asks her if she had a crush on her female costar in "The Fox" because she said no one asked that kind of question in the late sixties and she would have had to lie anyway.

For my part, until someone does a serious biography on Miss Dennis, I don't really know what to believe about her private life. She may well have been a lesbian, fine by me if she was, but Mr. Hadleigh seems to play very fast and loose with his facts in the book referred to. I would definitely not consider that particular book iron-clad documentation of Ms. Dennis' sex life.

Have you read her own autobiography? It is a very slim volume, more lyrical than loaded with anecdotes, but she makes an admittedly somewhat ambiguous reference to the dissolution of a long-term relationship with a woman. (Most of what is in the book is ambiguous. It was written towards the end of her life and focuses quite a bit on her cats and her relationship with her mother.) Additionally, the people who socialized with her, some of whom interviewed her over the years, would be more than willing to vouch for Sandy's non-straightness. (Liz Smith and Rex Reed are but two higher profile examples.) It wasn't ever much of a secret; her choice of Mulligan as her public companion was the first dead giveaway back then to anyone who wasn't quite sure. Hadleigh has his share of critics, by the way, but if he fudged the interview with Dennis he did a hell of a job and had her very distinct mannerisms and way of speaking down pat. Particularly during the sex part of the discussion, which was the most revealing thing about the interview, other than her talking about what a risk she took by accepting the part of Jill in "The Fox."

I read the same book, and thoughth EXACTLY the sab68me thing while reading it. It's as if he transcribed every "huh" and "uh" uttered my Ms Dennis, who did have a very distinct speaking voice.
I do wish that someone would write a (somewhat) comprehensive book on her life. The book that she wrote was excellent (but far from an autobiography) and I would love to know more about her work, her life, and her cats.
No, no"cruelty." I always think that has a nobler ring to it.

I've not only read it, but I've got my own copy of it. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear that she had diedin the middle of writing the last page. It almost appears unfinished.

Wasn't she living with Eric Roberts during the 80's? So she could be bi-sexual?

I remember another book about closeted lesbian actresses, claiming Sandy "went both ways," so I've always considered that a possibility as well. Eric Roberts must've been in the same boat as Gerry Mulligan was 15-20 years earlier.
