Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — John Amos

Well really 19 I didn't notice the age difference when they were on Goodtimes. I tell you even when I was a little girl I always wondered why James wife was so damn ugly. He is a nice looking man they could have somebody better looking to play his wife. Floridas bitching and whineing on the show got on my last nerve. I'm watching the marathon of Goodtimes on TV Land. I'm trying to search the web and see why James quit Goodtimes I believe JJ and he were the best thing about Goodtimes.

You're right, Florida was ugly, and was full of bitching and whining, to where it lead to James not taking a great seasonal job opportunity in Alaska, which would've had him away from home 6 months out of the year-but at least he wouldn't have been supporting his family financially, and the way he wanted to.
Florida only supported him, in the fact that she stayed with him through the hard times, but everytime he tried to advance the family (outside of his wanting to partner with a scheisty minister friend of his), it always appeared as if she was always going against him.

When I was very young I would hang-out with Ralph Carter and his girlfriend (yes ladies Ralph is 100% heterosexual. So one evening I attended an award show in NYC. I walked up to Ester Role and mentioned that I was a social friend of Ralph and I wanted to compliment her on her acting ability. WE, her fat-ass sister stod in between us and tried to skake my hand for Esther Role. Ester role looked at me as if to "How Dare you walk up to me for conversation" I never forgot that night and as far as I'm concerned she was a total bitch!

Esther Rolle was a talented actressthat's why she was chosen to play Florida. If she was "so damned ugly," then why did/do you bother watching "Good Times" at all? Is being attractive more important than being talented? Hmmmaybe not, because today's male rappers are neither talented nor attractive. Is anyone out there complaining about them?

John Amos was fired from the show because of some comments he made in an interview about the backstage fighting. The produces had him written out of the show by having him die.

The producers should have never had him written out of the show because John Amos and Jimmie Walker made the show great, both of them are one of the reasons why I watch the show, and Wilona is too funny. The first three seasons had great memories and scenes with John Amos and the family. The last three seasons were good and funny, but I still felt that there was something missing, and that was John Amos. If he was around during seasons 4-6, maybe the show would have gone on until season 8 or 10. When he was gone from the show, there aws nobody to replace him, and no disrespect to Carl, but he couldn't fill in for James and become a father figure to the kids and a second husband to Florida because it just didn't feel right.

I was under the impression that he left the show on his own due to the direction the show had taken. It was originally supposed to depict a strong family unit in the poverty stricken ghetto and as JJ's character got more popular, it just became a vehicle to showcase his nonsense.

You are correct. Even Esther Rolle was very upset that JJ's character had become so popular. She was a talented actress true to her craft and Jimmie Walker was a comedian, not an actor. I wonder if that's why she took that hiatus from the show.

Gee, and there was I thinking he left the show to play Kunta Kinte in the smash hit series "Roots."
Which role would you have preferred to play?

JJ is exactly why she left the show. I think the fighting back stage canme to a head and Amos was canned and written out. Esther was not pleased , and when the JJ character did not grow after James'death then Esther decided to leave but finally returned after JJ was forced to be the lead and grow up, but by then the show was on it's last legs.

fizbin4321 you said it right, Esther was a very talented actress and thats why she got the part, it had nothing to do with being a beauty queen. And you are 100% right when you say these rappers are neither talented nor attactive cause i have yet to see one who has 1 ounce of talent, nice to see i am not alone on those thoughts.

Deespite the presence of the talented Esther Rolle, the quality of the show took a nose dive after Amos's character was killed off. The reason I heard for his leaving the show was a mutual disagreemment between him and the producers of the show, who were showcasing Jimmie Walker's antics - which Amos did not agree with. So, he was gone, and the show tanked bacuse Walker's constantly saying "Dynomite" was not nearly enough to sustain a show of any quality.

It sure wasn't. I really hate the fact that there could not be some type of mutual agreement so that he could have remained on the show. I would have loved to see how he would have handled the situations where J J and Thelma wanted to get married.

I was always curious to know what their age difference was. I mean, I KNEW that she was older, but not an exact number. That's why I came here to find out. The irony is that someone already created a thread about it. It's amazing how people can be thinking of the same things.

Just for trivia, another Norman Lear show, "The Jeffersons," can claim the same. Sherman Hemsley is about 20 years younger than Isabel Sanford.
"All in the Family" spun off "The Jeffersons" and "Maude." "Maude" spun off "Good Times."
I think Norman Lear did 90% of my favorite sitcoms.
