I was looking over his credits and he played Esther Rolle's husband in a few guest stints on "Maude" and during the first two seasons of "Good Times". Why is his name Henry Evans on "Maude" and then it is changed to James Evans, Sr. on "Good Times"? I looked over some of the message boards on IMDB and could not find anything about this subject.

Basically, it was decided that 'Good Times' would be a spin off series from 'Maude'. As to why the names changed, the creators basically erased the entire history of the Florida Evans character (including names of family and such), so that is why we never hear about her past life working as a maid for Maude.

The only thing that really made Good Times a spin off of Maude is Florida Evans. Because Good Times never mentioned Florida working as a maid, James name was different on Maude.
Maybe they changed the name because they liked the name James, and it wouldn't sound right if J.J's name was H.J? -

There WAS ONE referance to Florida being a maid, she said something like "I when I was a maid then she looks up and says to god forgive me then told James she was a damn good maid"
and that the ONLY refernace to Florida's position as a maid
I don't recall which episode only that it was a early on as John Amos was on the series
