Who designed her 60's 'stripper' makeup? Awful.

Amanda Blake can be seen on some other shows (like the Dean Martin Roasts) and while no beauty, she certainly could have done better than the clown makeup they gave her on Gunsmoke.
Take a 111clook at some of the images in documentaries of the west, like any of the Ken Burns series, and you will see women in mainly a plain-looking appearance. They might have had some blush and/or lipstick, but they certainly didn't have the heavy eye shadow that Miss Kitty wore.
Really a disservice to Miss Blake and her character. Pretty jarring in the viewing of the series as well. Still a great show, but could have been more realistic. -

Amanda's makeup on Gunsmoke was applied to suit the time period of the "decorated" or "painted" women of western saloons, i t was piled on and applied as such, on purpose.
And I do not agree with your opinion about Amanda's appearance; she was very striking, and beautiful.
What, just for once in your life can't you be serious? -

Not sure if you've seen the early episodes of Gunsmoke with a younger Kitty and Matt, but her makeup was much more subdued. She had really soft hairstyles in the 50s and early 60s episodes, too, unlike the curls she wore as a latter-day Kitty. And I must disagree with you that she was no beauty - she was a stunner. Check her out in the Westerns Channel Gunsmoke episodes, her appearances on Red Skelton or her early films like Stars in My Crown.

I was just watching a 1968 episode and her hair was down really gorgeous! Long and full, falling not much short of her waist if straightened out. She was a beauty. I believe the makeup was worse overall in the '70s, but through the late '60s no problem really.

Her character was that of an old Saloon Madam so.
She was pretty but her 3 pack a day smoking habit caused her to age fast. She did look and sound alot older, her voice became very deep and she did get mouth cancer at 50
She did however have tons of charisma and was a good actress if you see the 1974 TV Movie Betrayal she was very capable of giving her character pathos. I think if she had not done Gunsmoke for 20 years she might have done more and better roles.
The makeup was harsh but that was the character. It was quite dated by the 70's when a more natural look for women came in. So yes it was a bit jarring esp since she was older then too. -

and while no beauty
No beauty?! Check her out in
Miss Robin Crusoe
and tell us she wasn't stunning.
Having said that, those cigarettes really hardened her looks and voice by the '70s. The makeup might have been a reflection of that and not something done for her character's sake.
No blah, blah, blah!
