Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Charley Boorman

I don't get why everyone is busting this guy's balls over being famous by proxy? Yeah, so he's best friends with Ewan McGregor, and has been for a really long time, as they met while filming The Serpent's Kiss. He is an actor after all, and so what if he's the son of a famous film director? There's lots of kids in Hollywood who get into the Biz due to their parents/brother/sister/uncle etc. Why aren't you busting Ewan's chops as his uncle Dennis was an X-Wing pilot in the original Star Wars series? What about the Phoenix clan, or the Gyllenhalls? There are tons of examples of this in the entertainment business!!! And besides which, did you expect McGregor to go biking around the world by himself? How boring would that be, who would he interact with, as those two chuckleheads are great entertainment when they're together. Both of them equally as funny, just different styles of humour. Also, riding bike is what really bonded Ewan and Charley together, so of course Ewan would want Charley along for the ride. (I know I would! I'd love to go biking with both of themtalk about good times! That and since I'm a girl, I'd have two great looking guys to do it with.)
GOD BLESS SCOTTISH MEN FOR THE SEXY ACCENT, ADORABLE CHARM, WICKED SENSE OF HUMOUR AND THEIR HUGE @#$*%!! - ALTHOUGH I'M PROUD TO BE 100% CANADIAN! CANADA ROCKS AND IS THE PROUD OWNER OF KEANU REEVES!

I dig your rant. I've only seen Charley in a few flicks but every time.. I thought he was great, entirely on his own merit.
      Great post.

        THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
I don't understand why such nonsense over his association with someone on the Hollywood A-list? Who cares who he knows! Maybe they're all just jealous that they're not hooked up with Hollywood royalty themselves? And again, he already had noterity because his father is a famous director, and he was the FIRST non-related male to kiss Angelina Jolie!!! Charley has had an interesting lifeLOOOONG before he had ever met Ewan McGregor! WHAT AN ENTERTAINING PAIR THOSE TWO ARE, EH? Maybe if people educated themselves about Boorman's life, maybe they would see the worth of his talents. And I just LOVE the fact that he's an absolute nutter on a bike!!!!!!!

Didn't know he was Jolie's first kiss on screen in addition to what else you mentioned, that's really pretty cool

Yeah I don't get it either? so what if he has family or friend connections? All of us at some point have used a friend or a family connection to get ahead. A deal on a car, a leg up on a new job.
So what's not to like about Charley? good family man, does allot for charity. Seems like a completely decent and fun guy.
Yeah i guess all good reasons to dislike someone?

Just saw Long Way Round for the first time and I was surprised at the 1 Star reviews on Amazon. There seems to be a minority (most of the reviews are overwhelming positive) that really have a lot of hate for Charlie and Ewan.
Anyway, having absolutely no perspective on the character or integrity of the real Charley Boorman (outside of the documentary) I found him to be a likable guy and a good friend and to Ewan McGreggor. I started watching Long Way Round for Ewan but over time I grew to really like Charley.
I particularly liked his argument about bear hunting in Alaska. I love Ewan McGreggor's positive attitude and his compassion for animals, but I thought Charlie had the more practical argument for hunting. He wasn't defending the Russian truck drivers who sell slaughter bears and harvest their gal bladders, but the real hunters who respect the ritual by using the meat.
Anywho, I vicariously enjoyed their journey and came to really care about Charlie and Ewan. Can't wait to see Long Way Down and then Long Way Up.
