sure seemed like a breakout part and performance to me
    any opinions or explanations appreciated
just now watching/listening to a dvd of the movie

I'm not really sure myself. But it was a special kind of supporting role, one that showed off his dry wit to best advantage.
Callan will always be Clay Boone to me.

I saw lots of Mr. Callan's performances in films and TV. Due to his contract with Columbia Pictures he was unable to recreate the role of Riff in "West Side Story". What a shame - he should have.

If IMDB had anything to do with it I would undersatnd, since their stills of Cat Ballou show Tom Nardini and say "Micheal Callan"!

Hi! I may be the biggest Michael Callan fan out there. I love him, most especially in Cat Ballou. I will never understand why Michael Callan didn't become a huge star, especially after Cat Ballou. While Lee Marvin was amazing and so was Jane Fonda, as well as everyone else, it was Michael Callan's sexiness and his portrayal of the "selfish and a little stupid, but now cowardly at all" Clay Boone that captured me forever. His character should never have been shelved after Cat Ballou ended. He was a special character. More than that though, Michael Callan had so much going for him. It always hurt me a little to see Michael go from Cat Ballou, to guest starring roles on television. I know he also had a starring role in the series Occasional Wife, for a season. I've watched some episodes on Youtube. I didn't really like the show but Michael was excellent. He had that devil-may care swagger again. I hope that he enjoyed the roles he did play.
I know this is an older thread. Hopefully there's someone out there who will converse with me.
