Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Cat Deeley

I went on IMDB because of that too. I just finished wathing The Kylie Interview and she really did annoy me. It's her facial expressions, and her right eye (it's slanted downwards)! I find it hard to look at her.

Personally I hate the way everyone speaks outside my village. And now that I think about it, I don't like the way most of them speak either
It's normal to prefer speach patterns that are closest to those familiar to you from your own environment. Just about everyone will find some accents irritating. If the speech patterns and intonation jar with those that are imprinted on your mind by your environment they just sound "wrong", some more so than others.
The same phenomenon occurs when a familiar song that you particularly like is covered by a different singer or band. Most people, most of the time, will dislike the new version and dismiss it as inferior to "their" version. This will be in marked contrast to those who are unfamiliar with the older song; they will most probably dislike the original when they hear it because it sounds "wrong" to them.
It isn't surprising that many of the negative comments are coming from Americans. Cat Deeley's accent isn't American and nor is it a British accent with which they are familiar. It is therefore "wrong" and irritating. This is something that is reciprocated by many British people, who if asked will describe many American women's voices as high, hard, nasal or whiny. Ultimately it's really a question of what you're used to.
Cat Deeley actually has quite a light Birmingham/West Midlands accent. A full-blown heavy Birmingham accent on American TV would really cause problems for the American audience!
The comments about Cat Deeley's asymmetrical facial features - nose, eyes, mouth - are also interesting. There is certainly substance to these comments, but I suspect that the criticisms, and irritation at these relatively minor irregularities, come mostly from female contributors. Women tend to focus on small imperfections, while men's perceptions will be tilted much more towards the overall picture. Many women will therefore look at Cat Deeley and see a generally attractive woman whose looks are marred by significant imperfections. In contrast men will simply see a good looking woman and will pay little specific regard to what they will perceive as minor imperfections.
Of course, if a similarly attractive woman arrived on the scene without those imperfections, a man would suddenly become aware that maybe Cat Deeley wasn't quite as attractive as she had previously seemed

        Great post.
One addition being that women are more likely to poke at a beautiful woman commonly liked by men out of jealousy or competitiveness.
In the same way men tend to accuse male celebrities popular with women of being gay.

Cat toned down her accent ages ago, so I can only laugh.. thinking of how Americans would react to her natural accent.
Americans treat the English language like they've learnt it as a second language, so when people don't have perfectly clear speech, they can't understand them. English people are somewhat lazy with the language.. because it's their language.. and they can be lazy and still understand what people are saying.
I find it funny how Americans emphasise every word and moan about English people not speaking proper English because they don't emphasise every word.
An English person could say a sentence in 3 seconds - which no American could fathom, but English people could.. because they are at home with the language and it's in their blood.
Americans will probably always treat the English language differently and feel that their way of using the language is the one and only way, because many of them don't have English heritage.. and don't appreciate what English is really like in its country of origin.

Her voice is very annoying, and having a British presenter seems all the rage on reality-based televison lately. WPT poker has another annoying Brit chick, but she at least has a nice rack.

I love Cat on SYTYCD. I find her pronouncing the dancers' names wron2000g cute. Pulin and Pitah!

I like her. The only thing that annoys me is after the dancers do their solos and she says let's here it for "It's NAME OF DANCER!!" Why does she need the word "it's" before the dancers name? Seems completely grammatically incorrect to me. I also think she looks a lot better on nights when the make-up isn't done so dark and heavy.

what is annoying about her is the odd way she speaks - who says "let's hear it for it's ryan"??? her syntax is just bizarre. as a host she ought to make an effort to speak properly. "let's hear it for ryan", for example, would be just fine and not make me cringe almost every time she speaks. i have never heard a host repeatedly make the same error in speaking. it is strange that the producers have not noticed this or, even worse, do not care.

This thread really surprised me. I think Cat is the perfect host for the show. She's upbeat and nurturing without being cloying, and seems to really care about the contestants.
As for her voice, if you want annoying check out Erin Andrews on Dancing With the Stars.
I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.
