She has an unusual way of speaking. In fact, it was precisely her way of speaking that made me recognize her when she was young. I am a Golden Girls fan and I've watched them over and over again. She appears in two episodes, but I prefer Mother's Day.
My husband and I are huge Peter Lorre fans and one of his movies was coming on, which starred her too. As I watched her, I kept telling my husband that there was something familiar about her. I told him it was the way she held her lips when she would talk, then it hit me. I ran in here to look her up and I was right, she was Anna in Mother's Day.
My husband was so impressed that I was able to pick her out from an obscure role in a movie when she was much, MUCH younger.
Okay, so all that said, tonight I was watching You Can't Take it With You. At the beginning are two men talking about the sale of the house. One of the men is named Mr. Hughes. Interestingly, he holds his lips exactly like Fitzgerald. I was certain that they must be related, but if they are it evidently is distant which is too bad.
It is just uncanny how similar they are. Does anyone else agree, if anyone else is able to see You Can't Take it With You of course.

I can't comment on the similarity you've observed but I have another comment on her speech, which is that she doesn't seem to have even a trace of an Irish accent! Ditto for another Irish actress, Maureen O'Sullivan. Did they really grow up speaking with what sounds in both cases like a very cultured English accent, or did they "refine" their voices for their acting careers?
