Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Rudy Giuliani

    ExplorerDS6789 — 17 years ago(March 06, 2009 10:54 PM)

From what I've heard, Rudolph Giuliani was a well liked man. Everybody talked about how cool he was, and how sorry they were when he left office. My question is, what was it about him that made him so cool? I don't live in New York, I've never even been in the state so I wouldn't know too well, but for all you New Yorkers who were there at the time he was mayor, why was he so well liked?

I have heard quite the opposite. I have a friend who used to live in Brooklyn and moved to Long Island around the time Bloomberg became the NYC mayor and he told me that, if 9/11 had not happened, Rudy would go down as the most hated Mayor of NYConce 9/11 took place, some people started to respect him but, had it not happened, virtually everyone would say "hate him."
This friend of mine also encountered Rudy one day and it was not a good one. He is a doctor and went to Ground Zero to help out and he said Rudy was there one day when he was. According to him, Rudy ignored all the minority doctors (and my friend, who is a doctor, is African American) but acknowledged all the white doctors.
He then met both U.S. Senators of New York, Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer (obviously Hillary is no longer U.S. Senator and that person is Kirsten Gillibrand)he said Hillary and Chuck were cla2000ss acts and acknowledged everyone.
I'm not a gynecologist but I will take a look.

Wow, that's unbelieveable. I had no idea he was so highfalutin and self absorbed. The reason I brought to light so many people liking him is because in the Adam Sandler movie Anger Management, Rudy has a cameo at the end, helping Sandler's character. Afterwards, Sandler points at Rudy and says something to the effect of "you are the man" or "you're the coolest".
In a 2002 SNL, during the end of Rudy's reign, he appeared on Weekend Update with Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey, who paid a loving tribute to him. Jimmy even asks if he really has to go and if he can go with him.
I figured that since both Jimmy Fallon and Adam Sandler are natives of New York that they thought Rudy was a decent mayor.
But thanks for answering my question. Once hearing positive things about Giuliani to negative, I see he wasn't the guy he was built up to be.

There are maybe a few NYC people who liked him but, from the people I have spoken to in NYC, they tell me he was still very much hated when he left officejust not as much since 9/11 happened and he got into some of the haters' good graces.
If anything, it is Hillary Clinton that is the one who is well loved in NYC. Everyone I have spoken to, who lives there (and even my friend in NJ who goes to NYC often), say Hillary is very popular in NYC.

Cajayson, your friend is right. I'm a New Yorker and couldn't stand him but my stepfather was a big time Giuliani supporter. And yes, Hill is still very much popular. I adored Hillary.

I heard that a lot of NYC disliked him because he stepped up law enforcement and "took all the fun away"
"Sometimes it's right to do the wrong thing, and right now is one of those times."

No, we disliked him because he was slime.
