Oh heck yeah. That was one of those okay, okay, okay (to each persons lament) and then Grandpa LAUGHING fit, tears and lack of breath. Now for some that may not have been that funny, but for some reason, at that moment. It floored me.
sigh I posted earlier that I was going to get Rootbeer and Oreos and watch Barnard Hughes movies.. That is tonight! (I work graveyard, so yahoo! I can do it all, and I don't have to share! HAHHAHAHAHA! My cookies! MINE!)

A truly underrated character actor, whose message board was apparently pretty sparse before his recent passing. I guess Joni Mitchell was right: You don't know what you've got, 'til it's gone. I especially liked his darkly comic turns in Where's Poppa? and The Hospital.

I've always wondered how Sanford & Son would've turned out if Norman Lear had stuck with his original choices of Barnard Hughes & Paul Sorvino instead of casting Redd Foxx & Demond Wilson in the roles of Fred & Lamont. Barnard Hughes was a great talent and so is Paul Sorvino but nobody could play those characters to perfection other that Redd & Demond.

I just watched "Da" with my mum. She doesn't really like watching films and usually walks out of the room because of boredom when I put on a DVD but not only did she sit through the whole film but she laughed so hard at Hughes's character so much that she cried! Shows what a credit he was to the profession. I'm sure his halent will be sorely missed.

Oh dear, I didn't know he passed away already. He was a great actor in Sister Act 2, The Lost Boys, and Cradle Will Rock.

R.I.P. Barnard Hughes! Didnt know he wad dead until now, and only recently as well! Just last summer! He was excellent in Lost Boys as Grandpa, his performance is memorable!

Yes, Barnard Hughes was certainly a great character actorwho on occasion was also a great leading actor! I remember him first from his role as "Dr. Bruce Banning," husband of "Meta Bauer Banning" (then played by Ellen Demming, in later years by Mary Stuart) on &quob68t;The Guiding Light" back in the early-to-mid 1960s.
I also recall Hughes's sitcom past, playing the lead of the kindly family doctor in "Doc," as well as the recurring role of the Catholic priest, "Father John Majeski," on "All in the Family." In fact, it was one of my favorite episodes of "Family," wherein "Edith" (Jean Stapleton) dented the priest's car with a can of Cling peaches, leading to the inevitable confrontation & misundersatnding with "Archie Bunker" (Carroll O'Connor)!
Hughes also starred in "Mr. Merlin" and was a member of the cast of "Blossom " for several years, as 'Grandpa Buzz Richman."
I was fortunate to have seen Hughes on stage in 1999 at Boston's Colonial Theater, his last stage role, in a production of one of Noel Coward's lesser-known works, "Waiting in the Wings." The play co-starred Lauren Bacall and Rosemary Harris, also featured Hughes' wife, Helen Stenborg, in the cast.
I know I have seen Hughes in films and other TV work as well, usually playing a grandfatherly figure, and almost always with a touch of wit and wisdommust say something about this man out-of-character, that he could play those types of roles so convincingly & well! -

I thought he had died, but I wasn't sure. I loved him in The Lost Boys and in Sister Act 2. RIP sweet man
