Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — David Jason

So typical of the mandela worshipping, left wingpc obsessed BBC to immediately populate the cast with annoying northern ethnics. Whats PARTICULARLY annoying is the fact that they were given norterh accents, dress and mannerisms where as anyone from this region will confirm most dont even bother to learn English.

As much as I loved the original series I am glad this is just a one off special. I don't think it did the original series any justice at all however it was good to see some of the original cast and a few added new one's I guess they must of been fans of Open all hour's. Sir David Jason is an absolute legend and it was good to pay tribute to Ronnie Baker.
Please BBC keep this as a one off show

How did they honestly think this was any good, i'm stunned they allowed it to go out, canned laughter, token ethnic groups, unfunny lines, I did enjoy Stephanie Cole and Lynda Baron though, but please BBC as with To the Manor Born, these remakes damage the original show, let this one go. Sorry but I am doubting how good David Jason is as an actor of late, his work over the last ten years has been questionable, Ghost Boat apart, that was awesome, but Diamond Geezer, Royal Bodyguard, Still open, what was he thinking

Hi, I have to agree. I think this type of humour has really had its day (too slapstick by half). I didn't even muster up a smile. I think it used to screen on a Sunday evening back in the day and I used to enjoy the escapism before school on the Monday but some things are best left in the past. It was never hysterically funny like maybe Only Fools and Horses but even that is being repeated so many times that it too is losing its magic. There are some comedies that have been made that have never been laugh out loud funny - Last of the Summer Wine was one that just never appealed for example. I have no interest in seeing the film of Dad's Army either as I never found that funny but rather immature. In Open All Hours they even had that silly, antiquated old prehistoric till and it was done to death back then. It brought nothing truly new to the table. It was a cringe from start to finish. Sad but true IMHO.
Canned laughter is nothing short of lazy and patronising.

Comedy is subjective, though. I have always loved Last of the Summer Wine and still do. It's a gentle humour that we can watch with our children without being concerned. I, for example, can't stand Mrs Browns Boys, but it's a very popular show. I still love watching Only Fools too, still laugh even though I know what's coming up!

I do agree in essence what you are saying about the gentle humour. I love Darling Buds of May for that reason and its rural appeal and charm. I recently bought the whole series on DVD and that is glorious to watch ig you are feeling a little down in the dumps!
Mrs Brown's Boys I watched once and thought it was crass - not something you would want to watch with your children I agree, although I don't have any and I still think it is cheap and nasty.
Happy New Year to you anyway! I hope it is a good one and that we get some nice new gentle comedy shows that rely on wit not innuendo

Do I note a little bit of racism creeping into your review?
Do us all a favour and keep your bigotted ideas to your own little group of like minded morons. This is supposed to be a film and t.v. review site not a front for the national front gits society!!!!!!
