I don't think it's a question of talent. It was just that Flo was easily the character that got more attention and her "Kiss my grits" was a national catchphrase for a while. Howland and Vic Tayback are talented but weren't as popular as Flo. Lavin sorta has a pointthe show WAS named "Alice".

So what are the producers to do? Make Lavin funnier, or not take advantage of the charms of a supporting player?
Mary Tyler Moore was probably glad Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman enriched her show.
Lavin wasn't even the 1st choice to play ALICE,Sheree North was.
Do you know how lucky Lavin was to even get a sitcom that made her very wealthy? Especially when her looks were not exactly how Alice is written to look.
(the ole Farrah Fawcett/Suzanne Somers syndrome)
Lavin has no point -

Linda Lavin is a evil woman. Diane Ladd quit because she could'nt deal with how mean spirited linda lavin was. And Polly Holliday wanted to stay on Alice and did'nt want her own show and linda lavin told the producers either Flo goes or alice

I had heard the producers of 'Rhoda' had wanted Lavin to be part of the cast of 'Rhoda' in the first season (1974-75), as one of Rhoda's high school friends. They did introduce her for one episode (Rhoda's bridal shower) but apparently they had 'difficulties with her'and withdrew their offer.
Actress Barbara Scharma joined the cast as a semi-regular (as Myrna) instead of Lavin as Rhoda's high school chum. -

She and Valerie Harper are very close friends. Im pretty sure Linda was dating or married to a producer or something from Alice so maybe that's why she had so much power to get rid of both Polly and Diane.

Andrea Martin did a great send-up of Lavin in the "Sweeps" episode of SCTV back in 1983. Played Lavin as
very difficult
to work with. Based on industry insider info, no doubt.

This is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Linda Lavin!
Her character as played by Andrea Martin practically puts the crew to sleep rehearsing her loooong, slooooow George Gershwin song again and again. Hysterically funny.
