"TV LAND" has been airing a "major, major mash marathon". during this they've showed two different retrospectives on the show, Memories of MASH and a MASH at 30 reunion show.
As it turns out, Larry was well liked by all the cast in addition to his friendship w Gary. Hard to imagine given his character on the show.
I think Larry Linville was a genius on MASH! He was the best at what he did; he took all the butt of the jokes for 5 yrs. God bless him, RIP, Larry. -

I watched the anniversary show too. Yes, apparently Gary was very close to both McClain S. and to Larry.
And Alan Alda specifically said in the interview show, that everyone really liked Larry and he complimented him for being such a talented actor.
Also McClain specifically mentioned what a brillant actor he thought Gary was and how much he enjoyed doing scenes with him. -

In cast reunions since Larry Linville died, everybody commented on how nasty Frank's character was and how it was such a contrast to the likeable guy Larry Linville was off camera.
Supposedly everybody liked working with him and said he was the nicest guy you could meet. It showed how good an actor he was that he could make Frank such a jerk. -

Apparently the late Larry Linville (RIP) was a very nice guy in real life, unlike his belligerant Frank Burns character, and was generally well-liked by his cast mates. Clearly the man was an underrated talent.

I had heard that they 'disliked' Larry only because they'd be ready to do a scene, Larry would sidle up to one of them, tell an incredibly funny off-colour joke and then just walk away, leaving the poor guy to blow take after take laughing at the joke.
