Just the kind of voice I love!

Ethel Merman had the exact female's singing voice that I looked for for a long time. I ran across old footage of her singing Alexander's Ragtime Band some month back, which was showing on a public-access channel called Arts, and I immediately knew I would like her. Her voice was loud, nasally, almost vulgar. It brightened my evening when I heard that; I was happy to later find that she was such a Broadway superstar. (Actually, I had previously known OF Ethel Merman I had never seen or heard heard her performing, though, incidentally enough, I was thinking to look up information about her, after hearing repeated references made about her on television).
She is one of my favorite female singers of all time! Who else is a fan?

You might say she was the Idina Menzel of her time - the
pre-microphone
days - but you never saw the effort - Merman never had to force it to be heard over the music the way Menzel did in WICKED.

I love some Ethel Merman. She's fun, she's spunky and man, can she belt out a tune.
Ann Magnuson (a performance artist) has an album called The Luv Show where she does an impression of Ethel Merman. It's funny. The song is "Sex with the Devil".
