When I was a kid I always had the famous revue man Karl Gerhard confused with Fred Astaire. Because they both had high hats.

Not odd at all. I'm older and grew up when Ethel Merman was still appearing on TV shows and specials. I always thought she was a loud and brassy broad. I still think she was and that's just how I feel about Bette Midler. I think there's something rather magnificent when a woman isn't scared to use her talent in an exuberant way - full of joy and passion. Middler has always reminded me of Merman.
