So whats the logic here? A great character vs an annoying character, seems pretty easy enough for me if I had the choice to kill off the annoying character.

I think alot of people (myself included) hate Gwen because of the way she treats Rhys. She cheats on him with Owen while also flirting with Jack, then when she tells him she retcons him while demanding forgiveness, the poor chap deserves better. The only thing that keeps her (barely) watchable is Eve Myles' acting ability.

Gwen isn't forgiven because it's the old double standard of woman = slut, man = stud
Some people would have you believe that being a female Slutty McSlutSlut is the worst thing that anyone could do.
Owen's rape spray was played in a humourous way so it's totes alright, derp, and it's not like he forced them down onto the ground and had his wicked way with them LULZ.
That's the kinda logic people use. OK, what Owen did isn't as bad as forceful rape but it's still technically rape and he's a skeevy little worm. -

It's not just the audience that ignored Owen's behaviour(which a lot of them didn't really), more importantly it was THE WRITERS that thought it would be funny for Owen to use the spray. Just like it was the writers that thought it would be a good idea to have Gwen retcon Rhys and never ever touch on this event again. Even though honesty in her relationship became a big issue that Gwen fought for in season two.
But in general Owen is a character that at best is written for people to love to hate. You expect him to be scummy and in the odd moments when he's a good doctor/co-worker/friend your easily impressed. Gwen is a character who we are suppose to see as special and one of a kind and is placed on a pedestal by Jack and others in her life. A pedastals an easy place to fall from.
And Tosh we barely got to fricken know! Sigh. -

I have to say, even though I am a Janto fan, I never saw her as a threat to Ianto and Jack's relationship or as a rival for Jack's affection. The scenes that were supposed to support Gwack (what a horrible word) were woody and really didn't have much chemistry between Gwen and Jack. Some of them were just painful to watch. I saw her as a slut (and I did not approve of Owen and the alien spray either, but that was one scene). Gwen screwed around with Owen and rubbed it in Tosh's face, rubbed her relationship with Rhys in everyone's face while she was screwing Owen and trying to flirt/get with Jack. At the same time we are told how she is the one we should identify with and should really love her as she is everywoman. No, she was not everywoman. I couldn't identify with her. Maybe saying something about the gap in her teeth is not a nice thing to do but I also think the gap is ugly. And the way she tries to express any emotion by bulging her eyes out is disconcerting.

YES!!!! And a thousand times yes!!! This is my opinion too. I suppose this is the reason that the show wasnt worked5b4 with her as a main character (because it hasnt worked)Im a Janto fan, and i love too Naoko (sweet, clever, strong, adorable, inteligent) and Owen (Burn Gorman is a FABULOUS actor), Indira too (Suzie! much better she than Gwen)Never I could identify with Gwen, she is annoying (even before Janto existence)and this is only my opinion, but i think Eve isnt a great actress (maybe she was only bad directed, i dont know).

I'm kind of a Janto fan and I don't see Gwen as a threat. I even think the chemistry between Gwen and Jack is quite strong. I think that's because the writers intended to do that.
Gwen isn't bad. I pity her because the creator or writers seemed to make her a bitch with self-awareness for unknown reasons. They put loyal, modest, likable characters, such as Tosh and Ianto, around her to make her looked so terrible. If Russell really killed Tosh off for this ridiculous reason, he must have been mental!
Russell seemed to love those kind of characters who sleep around or flirt around, and their partners are all very loyal. You can see the pattern in Doctor Who, Torchwood or Queer As Folk.
