Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Richard Mulligan

    Temsi — 21 years ago(October 03, 2004 05:19 PM)

Very few actors can be funny, touching, charming and relatable at the same time, without one interfering with the other. Richard Mulligan made it look easy.
His comic timing was impeccable. He was an extraordinarly physical comedian and could make you laugh without saying a word. Just a look could crack you up.
He could go from silly to tragic in the blink of an eye, but he always took you with him. Which is why I don't think anyone else could have pulled off the character of Burt Campbell on Soap. No matter how absurd the situation, you could always relate to him.
Anyway I just thought I'd say something about this great actor, seeing as nobody has posted anything on his board.
I remember being very sad when he died 4 years ago, and every time I see him on TV I'm reminded of the talent we lost with him. And of the talent we lose every year.
Rest in peace Richard Mulligan, and thanks for all the laughs and the tears.

      Yes, he was hilarious.
I liked all the characters in Soap but I always looked forward to scenes with
Richard Mulligan or Katherine Helmond or both!
      Real belly laugh comedic actors.

Here Here! I'm glad someone else feels this way!
I remember him fondly as both Burt Campbell from "Soap" and Dr.Harry Weston from "Empty Nest". He was also quite good in the films "Micky and Maude" and "The Heavenly Kid". I wish he'd done more filmwork, but tv seemed to be kinder to him.
I,too, recall when hearing about his passing on feeling very sad. Around that timea few months before I knew,if I recall rightI had been watching "Little House on the Prairie" reruns and noticing him in a guest spot as a returning Civil War vet whose flashbacks of battle caused him great difficulty readjusting to life as a simple music teacher and wondering what happened to him, wondering what he was up to and why he hadn't been in anything much recently.
Wish he could've had better luck in relationships. His last marriage was to a porn star,if I recall right, and that didn't end very nicely, either.
        You are missed,Richard.

Amen to that. Very disappointing to see this little traffic on his page. Richard was a tremendous talent whom I miss seeing.

Amazing actor. He did a film in 1964 about interracial marriage. Called "One Potato, Two Potato".
Very dramatic role where he is involved in a custody battle with his ex-wife.
He has several dramatic scenes, one where he doesn't even say anything when he finds out his ex-wife married a black man. Yet he you know what he is thinking in that scene, just by his movements.
                  That's an actor!

Thank you for the recommendation. Will watch "One Potato, Two Potato".
Just completed binge watch of "Soap" in its entirety.
I promise, we will get the 5th season outline from Ms. Harris. We must!
What a genius. Both of them.
Watched "Micki + Maude" last night. Watched "One Fine Mess" recently, too.
Will watch all of his films. As an actor myself, I know talent when I see it!
                    Thank you, Richard!
And I, too, wish he'd had better results in his personal relationships, but as a professional, he's tops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
