It can be that he spent too much time doing Al Bundy, making it very hard for him to be taken for a character that's not related to it. Therefore we could also think he's part of the problem, should have left the show after two or three seasons to take care of his movie career. Instead of staying and taking the obvious risk of being Al Bundy forever.
But maybe he feels he had his moment in the sun, and now that he's more than sixty and probably filthy rich, he wants to take it cool. Looking after his daughters, spending time with his wife, personnel projects etc. And he's just coming back sometimes to have some fun.
Maybe life is a pain or maybe he wasn't brave enough to leave Al Bundy, but maybe it's his choice.
But he's a great actor and I would love to see him more in bigger parts. And I have to admit I would be DELIGHTED to be told a movie of Married with children is coming -

In a way, Ed O'Neil is like Carroll O'Connor. Two talented actors that kind of became type cast due to their legendary roles. Hopefully Ed will be able to kick of a new segment of his career, just like Carroll did a couple years down the road. I'm looking forward to Ed's new show.

Yes please, he need to be playing a grumpy careless man again. In his new series he's too smart. He will always be typecast, but so what. Give him a proper role, and please America, make tv-series edgy and less moralistic than today. Watching Married with children now (or else I would never be on the Ed O' Neill forum), and I wish TV could make something as good. Curb your enthusiasm is up there, with Big bang theory, but not as far as precise and edgy as The Bundys. We need to see people who lack a sense of moral. We need to see a sweaty dirty old man who takes a pride of going to the toilet. We need Al Bundy!
By the way, am I the only one who hate the french? -

Interesting how Modern Family (2009) literally happens one year later after5b4 your post, which could easily be considered as having the same success or even more than that of Married with Children (1987). Obviously, it would appear there was much demand for his work. Hard to believe my Married with Children only ended 11 years prior to Modern Family, and 10 years prior to your post.

He's been successful on stage, screen and TV. I don't know if he would be in a blockbuster film. The way you sound, you sound as though he hasn't done anything since MWC. Oh, yes, you wrote this before Modern Family, which has given him a second hit series, yet, even at the time you wrote this, he was working steadily.
