Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Ray Park

    isis77 — 17 years ago(April 29, 2008 04:16 AM)

Like i've said other times i'm a huge martial arts fan. I'm into asian movies and asian martial artists, mr Park is the only white wushu/shaolin artist that i like. The asian artists get all the possible respect, enough that i don't have to go post on their boards to defend their reputation. But mr Park gets bashed to no end, and most of the time i'm sitting there thinking, 'NO WAY!'.
In the past few months, since his upcoming role as Snake Eyes, i've read nothing but the same thing:
"thank god he's playing a mute ninja since he can't act or speak"
stupid assertion that nerds spam any movie board with.
Since when acting is only about delivering words? Acting's about presence, attitudes, not just words. There was a lot of acting in roles such as Darth Maul or Toad.
Ecks vs Sever sucked because of the director and the production. Anything else he was in, was just 10 dollars budget indy movie, and he did well considering all.
He's had one non martial arts movie role in "What we do is secret", too bad it's never really come out on dvd. But reviewers have commented like this,
".Also, a great performance from none other than Ray Park (yes, Darth Maul, Ray Park!) as Brendan Mullen, the legendary LA punk rock club owner."
We should see him in a lead role to actually be able to comment the way everyone does. And we haven't yet, we haven't seen much of him yet, for his own choice (i guess). So, how about we give him a break?
In a recent interview the poor guy said that he WOULD LIKE to play batman, and the day after there were tonnes of threads denigrating him as batman. He can't even have dreams apparently.
I hate that his reputation is this bad. He's brilliant, good looking, talented, with great presence, and even a little taller than 5'9''. His only fault is that he's not an arrogant hollywood prick and attention slut, or he'd probably had a much better reputation like any other.
For all the nerds unhappy with my post, read this:

      YOU SAID IT!
It's so so stupid how much nerdrage there's been about him - it's pathetic!
Every review he gets, his presence is praised like none other in his movies - but that's not acting? WHAT IS? Dialogue? Has he even been in a dialogue rich role yet? No. But apparently we can judge him for it anyway!
All I see is a lot of (male) nerds harping on like they're the official guardian of the universe and Ray Park broke the time stream or something.
His height is always reported being less than it is, people talk about his muscles like they were fat, he's called ugly and his accent is ripped to pieces. Has anyone heard Christian Bale's natural accent? Same as Ray's! But obviously Bale is the only man from england who can put on an accent, right.
And why is it always guys who are bitching and moaning about him?
Guys who can't even do a handstand, let alone a butterfly twist with dual broadswords?
Sigh. Nerd Rage. Spend your energy on something slightly more important than fury over the (wrong) height of some actor who happens to play one of the guys you have an action figure of!

Ray Park should get his chance as a leading actor. Hopefully Iron Fist will get the go ahead but looks doomed at the moment.

I absolutely love everyone who's been a part of this thread. The man is awesome, plain and simple.
I met him at WonderCon back in '04, and he was so insanely sweet. There were TONS of people all lining up at the StarWars tables, but he still took the time to talk with EVERYONE and take pictures. He was laughing at himself when I was talking with him; his sign on the table saying his name and what movies he's been in was covered in doodles and little pictures, and he was telling me that he got there way too early and ruined his sign, saying no one will know who he was since his name was covered. I told him people will recognize his face, and he said, "What? I'm not wearing the face makeup like Toad or Maul, and no one saw Ecks VS Sever, so they won't know who I am." then he was saying he should go get a hot dog cause no one will recognize himI didn't mean to go on about it haha Anyway he was really, really sweet, and yes, he was MUCH taller than sites have been saying; I'm 5'9'' and he was two or three inches taller than me. And no, he wasn't wearing lifts.
Like you guys said, his prescence is magnificent! I think a lot of people forget about Sleepy Hollow, Ray WAS the Headless Horseman, and he brought so much life and depth to a role in which HE DIDN'T HAVE A HEAD!!! Yes, Christopher Walken was bad ass, as usual, but he was on screen for what, 5 minutes? It was aaaaaall Ray, and I adore him.
Bill, get your own funeral. Timmy and I are going zombie.

Ray Park is flaming awsome, he's just unfotunate that he gets very few lines and generally where's tons of make up, as in X-Men, Star Wars, Sleepy Hollow.
But currently he's working on a project with Ryan Wiebber and Micheals "Dorkman" Scott, the guys from RvD and RvD2 and for once he's properly acting and judging by the trailer he looks awesome.
                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IIaaSQaGWQ
Spread the trailer and tell all your friends.

Ray is one sexy beast even as Darth Maul and Toad. He's great and I love him with and without the make-up, plus he was probably the greatest thing in Star Wars PotM. One sexy beast as Maul. I just love him and his european accent.

I agree with you all on this The Nerd Rage should get a life. I went to see Eeks VS Server (MS sorry) because I heard Ray was in the movie. He had a great part as a bad guy and yes there were some martial arts parts where he was up agaigst Server. When I heard he was doing to play Toad I was jazzed about it and boy he did a great job with that character not to mention that Tounge they made for him. And Now with him doing GI Joe i will go see it only because he's in it and he plays one of my fave beloved characters Snake eyes. I will go see any movies he is in and I will also buy them on DVD

Back in High School I had seen TPM with a good friend of mine, and we used to argue with other people about how cool Darth Maul was and how badass Ray was in it. People kept saying that Darth maul was a pansie Anyway, my good friend and I performed a fight scene from Macbeth (Macbeth vs. Macduff)for our senior acting seminar. We spent days choreographing and weeks rehearsing with our stage combat and practice weapons. It was extremely hard and very rewarding to say the least. It's one thing to watch and criticize the stunt double's work, and totally another to be in that line of work. I can tell you right now that the hardest part of acting in that scene was the physical work. It's the physicality that pushed the lines, and created compelling beats throughout the scene. Having done both movement and voice work, I know first hand that your body is absolutely essential to giving a convincing performance. I, like Ray Park would be much more proud of my work as say a Darth Maul or Snake Eyes than any supporting actor role with 5 or so lines. Keep up the dedication to YOUR craft Ray, it is a joy to see your talents on screen!

                                    GREAT points.
As a fan of wushu from way way back I was so thrilled with Phantom Menace to see real wushu moves in a mainstream film. For anyone with a technical eye, his final fight with Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor was nothing short of fantastic. Terribly difficult moves deliver1c84ed with speed and power. Ray Park is first rate athlete; no question about it.
Wushu is perfect for the big screen and only Ray Park (in the west) is even trying to deliver it. I wish him continued success.
(I want to also mention Chiaki Kuriyama's textbook performace in Kill Bill with what is known in wushu as the meteor hammer (or rope dart when sharp). That was a great sequence also.)

The character Darth Maul is the only reason I own TPM on DVD. Ray Park as Darth Maul was badass. Darth Maul was as intimating/badass as Darth Vader. What a wasted opprotunity not to have Darth Maul antagonize Obi-Wan and Anakin through out AotC. Forget Old man Dooku.

Fun fact Ray Park didnt do the voice acting, all he did was the stunt fighting. The guy from Shaun of the dead did the voice, pete. (forget his real name) But i have to admit Ray Park is awesome, I loved his part in Ecks vs Sever. He should have bigger movie roles 😕
