I'm not counting Jurassic Park III, just the ones he directed as well as wrote.

I agree with many of your points, and I do agree that "Sideways" is Payne/Alexander's weakest script, it is Payne's best direction yet. His work with actors is amongst the best directors today, and his use of music, editing, humanism, etc. is superb. But I do not think it is as good as "About Schmidt", although barely. The last shot of About Schmidt is the best thing that Payne has ever done, and Election is the only truly perfect comedy made in the past 10 years. But to dismiss Sideways in such a simplistic way is reductive and ignorant. You haven't posted an intelligent (many childish ones, granted) reason why you thought it wasn't good. Like I said, I agree that Sideways is not Payne's best film (the acting really saves it from mediocrity), but Payne is so intelligent, so fiercly devoted to showing real humans on screen, I cannot brush anything he does aside as stupid and simple.

"Sideways, however, will be forgotten about in four months time, when everyone realizes it was simply just an OK movie."

100% agreed, Sideways was crap. Election is by far his best film, it's not even close.

- Election
- About Schmidt
- Sideways
- Citizen Ruth
I love all of Payne's movies and think he, next to Wes Anderson, is probably the most consistent of the handful of talented directors that came to fore in the mid-90s. "Election" and "About Schmidt" are both about as perfect as movies can get, and "Sideways" and "Citizen Ruth" are about as perfect as movies can get short of being as perfect as a movie can get.

- Election (10/10) The best comedy all time
- Sideways (10/10) By far the best movie of the padt year
- About Schmidt (8/10) A very acid and fun movie
Alexander Payne is one of my favorite directors all time, he is so talented and his movies have a lot of fun and I really love that.
I cant wait to see his next movie.

I really feel like I'm splitting hairs with the top three, but here goes:
- About Schmidt (10/10)
- Election (10/10)
- Sideways (9/10)
- Citizen Ruth (7/10)
Sideways was perhaps as good as the other two in many ways, but I just needed a few more laughs to get the same tone that I love.
