Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mel Smith

Robb16d0ie Coltrane keeps threatening to leave the Harry Potter films he's tired of playing Hagrid, apparently. Well, I say cast Mel Smith in the part. He'd be awesome.

Dude! I so thought they were the same person when I was watching him in The Princess Bride. I thought he looked just like Robbie; of course though he was covered in albino make up.

Except for Coltrane having a thick Scots accent, and Smith having a distinct southern accent.

Not seen it. Used to like S&J though.

I just surfed over here to figure out where i know Mel from (i'm watching The Princess Brib68de right now!) - and i don't remember seeing anything much else he's been in. I think i thought i recognized him because he looks and sounds like Robbie Coltrane. Well spotted.
I'm not sure he should play Hagrid just because of the resemblance, but he certainly is an enjoyable presence on-screen.

You should see him in Brain Donors. I finally watched it for the first time last night. It's not for everyone, but I really liked it.

                    I'm watching
                    European Vacation
right now and both he and Robbie Coltrane are in the hotel scene. They're both funny, but easy to tell apart here.
