Now I have to say, that I hadn't realized how big a fan of 'Alas Smith & Jones' I was, until tonight, while my Mum was watching "Marple: The Sittaford Mystery", and somewhere out in the periphery of my earshot, I heard one of the characters check in somewhere as Smith Jones.
To which I pulled myself away from whatever it was I was doing, to tell my Mum, "That'd be funny, if Mel Smith or Gryph Jones was in this episodebut since neither is, I'm irritated they said that." And I casually went back to what I was doing.
I had to let the dog out, and when I came back in, Miss Marple was still on, and I had to do a double take. John Enderby actually was Mel Smith.
I also find myself confessing that being in the US catching any episodes of 'Alas Smith & Jones' was difficult. They used to run it either on cables A&E at some outrageous hour, or on PBS..at an equally outrageous hour.
The problem being, everytime I caught it, it seemed they were doing the B&D skit. Which I found peculiarly amusing, until the time my grandmother strolled thru the room, to scold me for ordering a skin flick.
It took my Mom, the TV Guide and the rest of the "Alas Smith & Jones' program to convince her I wasn't being an obscene teenaged girlso Thanks to that night, I can spot Mr. Smith anywhere.
I hope he's in more programs. I think he's still a genius.
