Summer proposed "Ordinary Girl" in the early/mid 1990s, when she wrote the musical for Broadway (she sings some songs from it in her "VH1: Live and More: Encore" concert available on CD and DVD). However, no big money producer was willing to finance the project for her and it has sat on the shelf since then.
Don't forget, when she proposed this musical, the big London blockbusters were sweeping Broadway: "Miss Saigon", "Sunset Boulevard", etc. "Juke Box" musicals really didn't make their mark until a decade later, and the competition for Summer was strong.
Paul Ryan's proposal is a budget that goes against the teachings of Jesus.

I remember reading about this and wondered what had become of this play, because it sounded great from the song she did on her VH1 special, but I see what you are saying, the timing was not right for this play, but now if they were to pitch this now, I am sure they could find a place for it, there are so many musicals now, someone would back it. I hope it does make it to the stage and eventually the screen one day.

Welcome williams! Besides for the obvious similarity in facial features without even trying to look a like, Kelly has a pretty powerful voice! Its not Donna summer's, but it would be reassuring to know that If they go the route of not wanting to dub Donna's voice, atleast her portrayer has a good voice already.

Yes, she sure does, people tend to overlook that when comparing her to Beyonce, but she can hold her own, and you are also right about it not being Donna Summer's as there was only one and can never be another, but she could handle it, I think. It would be great if this came together.

In March, Berry Gordy will finally stage his Motwon musical on Broadway - another project which has taken many years to see the floodlights. If this show is a success, I wonder if that will give financiers the 'green light' to get Summer's biopic on the stage?

I'm not too familiar with Kelly Rowlands music but I think Beyonce doesn't have the powerful voice that Donna had. I took a real long time to think about this one and came up with my choice, Tichina Arnold (starred in Martin, Everybody Hates Chris and Happily Divorced). She sang in the stage version and movie verson of Little Shop Of Horrors. Every few episodes she sings on Happily Divorced and her voice is beautiful. I really don't think Donna's life would rate a theatrical release, so we may be looking at a tv movie and Tichina certainly has some impressive tv roles to her credit. I'd rather them choose an actress that can sing really well over a singer who wants to try acting.

And Kelly Rowland can act, I think she does a great job,but I also think Tichina Arnold is great also, she has a beautiful voice and long resume, so I would never doubt her ability, but I would not write Kelly Rowland off as just a singer who wants to try acting, as she does have some things under her belt that she has done.

In addition to Kelly Rowland and Tasha Smith, I think Meagan Good, should get some consideration as well, she has the acting chops and she could pull this off also.

I don't see a Donna Summer biography film ever happening, her life (fortunately) did not have the meda0lodramatic turns that are usually the core of such films. She didn't have a husband who beat her up, she wasn't a boozer or a drug addict, she didn't have a violent death, she didn't lose everything after a fall from popularity, she did not come from extreme poverty, she didn't have an illness or accident strike her down in her youth. Her death was too early but she was not young. What could the bulk of the script be but simply somebody singing her songs and who needs that when we have the originals to listen to.

^ Best post I've read today, maybe this week!
Donna's life was not the stuff of which biopics are made. She built a career exclusively on talent, and though she had a distinctive image and was the object of a few micro-controversies (most of which have thankfully been forgotten), she largely avoided the spotlight when she wasn't recording and performing, and she left us nothing but great music to remember her by. That's enough for me.
