I'm with you guys! I LOVE Russ Tamblyn!..and YES, I agree that he is extremely under-rated as an actor/singer/dancer.
As to "West Side Story"..it's my favorite musical of all time (used to be "Oklahoma!", but I wised up) 😉 ..and Riff is my FAVORITE character in the film. While I am not bored with the movie after his death, I am very saddened because of Riff's demise. When Russ is onscreen, you can't take your eyes off of him..and when his character dies, it just changes the whole tone of the picture for obvious reasons. His death is the catalyst for everything else that happens after (Tony kills Bernardo in retaliation and is later killed by Chino, in kind, as we all know)..but it's also more than that. Even if everything was "wrong" between the Sharks and The Jets, everything was all "right" because Bernardo and (especially) Riff were still alive.. I don't know if anyone knows what I mean. It's just that when you're drawn to someone in a film, they become your anchor..and when that anchor disintegrates, then it changes the rest of the experience for you. Even when I listen to the soundtrack, I'll sometimes skip over the "Rumble" song because I know what's coming. To me, the worst part of the film is Riff's death, followed by Tony's (which just rubs salt in an already-existing wound). But Riff..well..what can I say? You all know what I mean..and it doesn't help that Russ isn't onscreen long enough to satisfy. Just when you're starting to saturate yourself with every bit of his handsome face and talent to your heart's content, he's killed off. It almost feels like a tease. And as for best supporting actor nominations/wins..while I thought George Chakiris did a nice job, I don't see how he did any better than Russ..and I mean no disrespect to George or his talents. I just don't see why Russ wasn't nominated, too.
I saw in an interview where Russ had said that he originally wanted to play Tony. THAT I would have loved to have seen! It's too bad he never got the chance. I think he would have been great.
    Hugs,
    Jo

I don't know exactly how I stumbled into this forum, but when I saw posts about Russ Tamblyn, I had to jump on it. I have always loved him, and he is my absolute hearthrob in West Side Story. I can even remember being crazy about him in Tom Thumb.haha! And Seven Brides for Seven Brothers..I own it and have seen it dozens of times. No one has ever been a more exciting dancer than Russ in the movies!!

I am so glad I found people who2000 also love Russ Tamblyn. I have loved him since I saw tom thumb, In fact I remember going to see high school confidential when I was very very young. Too young to see that picture. I didn't care as long as Russ Tamblyn was in it. I would see every movie he is in if I knew about it. I did not see the documentary about the making of west side story but I wish I could get my hands on it. I too wish he was move visable. Do you know how I can contact him?

I liked Seven Brides for Seven Brothers the best. At the dance, it's spectacular when he dives headlong off the boards and lives to tell it!

Omg. It's true, he is totally adorable and talented. I just recently took notice of him and now he is one my favorite actors. I agree, he is extremely under-rated. He was spectacular in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and West Side Story. Can you give me any good suggestions of movies of his to watch?

Don't miss "The Haunting." He's in it with Claire Bloom and Julie Harris. 1963. Brilliant movie.

And see also The Fastest Gun Alive. Tamblyn has an excellent solo dance, very much in the Seven Brothers style.

I remember him as the little boy with the sling shot ready to take on the Philistines in "Samson And Delilah" with Hedy LaMarr and Victor Mature.

I always thought he was cute in SBFSB, but it was while watching Peyton Place I fell in love with Russ 🙂 His character Norman was so sweet and lovable and every time Russ came on the screen I got butterflies XD
Now I have got my friends into Russ as well and it's awesome. He is without a doubt my favourite actor of all time. He is sooo talented and has played such versatile characters 🙂 There isn't enough actors who are amazing dance111crs, gymnasts, singers and are gorgeous too! ;D

I loved him as Todd's dad on "Todd Margaret" and then was surprised when I started watching "Twin Peaks" and saw him as Dr. Jacoby.
I didn't even KNOW he could sing and dance and already thought he was amazing.
